This is my first post.

I'm modifying an AR XA turntable with a new Rega RB301 tonearm [yet to be purchased, but the modified subchassis and top plate is set up for it] and
would like some recommendations for cartridges that might be suitable.

MM or MC? I haven't decided yet...

Hi Wayner,

  Again, I haven't bought the RB301 yet, but I'm planning to attach it to the subchassis when I do. I usually go to the Needle Doctor or HiFi Sound for cartridges.

The new Rega RB301 arm does not come with the former 1/2" threaded pipe mount, which may have been easier to adapt to your AR, but rather now has 3 screw points on a rather large bolt circle. It will present you with some challanges, but hopefully, you can get thru it. It should sound real good if you can get by the monkey work.

  Yes, the modded subchassis has the three mounting holes needed for the RB301. Besides cartridges, it would also be cool to hear any
recommendations concerning the motor, pulley, etc. anyone has.

The Ortofon OM10 thru OM40 are nice high compliance cartridges. Very dynamic and clear.
Also consider the Ortofon 2Ms. A step up from the OMs.

   How much can you spend on a new cart? What are your expectations sound wise of your new cart. If you want a moving coil sound without a stepup transformer lots of folks like the Denon DL-160 for instance $180.00........

Wow.  Nice project.  I don't have a cartridge rec.  I'll defer to Soul, Wayner and Mjc.  Just wanted to say hey, onward and upward!
