Casters for HT2-TL?
« on: 2 Nov 2009, 03:49 am »
Hi Folks:

I did a search in this circle and didn't find any specific information.

I have been thinking about replacing the speakers' spike with casters.  I found a better position for my speakers, but I am hesitant to leave them there permanently because the right speaker is in the line of traffic, and I worry about damage to the speaker.  I have been moving them but not without damage to the hardwood floor.

Does anyone have a recommendation for casters?  Is there a significant sonic downside to using casters?  Also, does anyone know the thread dimensions?  I could remove a spike and measure the diameter, pitch, and length, but if someone already knows, I won't need to risk moving the speaker.

Thanks,

I put some of these Waxman Floor Sliders on my spiked racks and subs, at least until I decided where everything was to go.

I just dropped the tip of the spike into the little cups on top.  They were about $5 at Menards, Lowes, etc.and worked great on my bamboo floor.

You might want to visit Herbie's Audio Lab  circle here on AudioCircle. Herbie's got some dandy Little Fat Gliders that will not only provide mobility but also include decoupling qualities.  :thumb:

Thanks for the replies.  Does anyone know the thread diameter, pitch, and length of the screws in the spikes?  No one is around to help me place a speaker on the side to remove a spike.

Most likely 1/4-20.  Most of his have been that but no guarantee this one is.

Why aren't you just tipping it over onto a couch cushion or blanket?  Do you have any 1/4-20 bolts laying around you could try and thread into the insert?

Problem with casters is they make your speaker unstable.  And then there's the goofy look. :duh:

On the HT2's, they are 3/8 16.

Hi Satfrat:

Are you using the gliders? I have some off-the-shelf units under the spikes on my Songtowers, but they are not super stable. The cone/spike decouplers look like they would certainly be beefier. My current listening room has carpet, but I anticipate that the next place will have wood floors (assuming I can ever find a buyer for my house).
