What tempature is your soldering iron set at

I am curious where all you DIYers  have your irons set at. I am populating a small board for a CMOY headphone amp. My Hakko 929 set at 560. I was trained in the navy many years ago to solder and was qualified to micro minature work but at the time digital soldering irons were not around. I used to set the temp pretty much by eye and feel.

I can't be of much help.  My soldering station is electronically regulated based on the type of tip you put in.  The fine point tips are usually lower heat than the wide fat tips.

Ed,

What kind of solder are you using?

I use about 680 for most stuff using wonder solder, and maybe crank it up to 700 for larger pieces -- that's with the standard soldering iron though, and most of the time I use an American Beauty resistance soldering station which doesn't have a temperature setting, only a current setting.

The 680 degree setting is just right for perfect flow of the solder through plated through holes with the wonder solder, even on small transistors.

I use good old Kester "44". For circuit board work and point to point, I set my station around 575. I'll crank it to 800 for heavy gauge wire to binding posts.
