BTW, based on this review and some other good info and recommendations, I have bought a pair of the Ref 1's. 1,k shipped with grilles... 4 months old. Yay! I am really looking forward to hearing what you all heard in this review. I'll be comparing them to Diluceo's and writing a review in January.

C-man,

You just got a steal!

With your gear they should sound incredible.

Look forward to your impressions in comparison to the Diluceos.

I second that suggestion.  Particularly perplexing is your findings the 626r's sounded congested compared to the RM1s.  I think this makes sense, since they use the same mid & tweeter but add two woofers, yet this contradicts the findings of nearly everyone who's posted their impressions of the two.

I'm very interested since I've been considering the 626's lately.  For the most part I'm not a fan of standmounters, though, so I find the RM1's a lot more appealing on a practical level.

Hi Rob,

In general I don't normally hear too much congestion in the 626R until well into extremely loud listening levels.

Since the cross-over of the neopanels to the woofs on both speakers is the same, they would normally expereince distress at the same relative levels, in most instances.

Also in general the bass response of the 626Rs is well beyond specs or expectations (given a high current amp) but as we saw Sat, there are conditions where they don't go quite as low.

I have measured a reasonably flat response down to 31.5 db!!! at the listening seat, in my room, with my system.  So with the right set up and system you can get a pretty good bass output.

Although we didn't measure it, (just earballing) we got the nOhr mini9s to also go quite low in my room/system.  So room and set up "is" important.

Maybe someday we'll get Mike to "haul" the RM1s over, and hear what they can do here.  i would wager they will go "LOW".

Of all the speakers that we had listened at  HarleyMYK,  they all sound very nice. My impression on these speakers are very much on par with John & Mad Dog. Here is my own personal preference.

1. Onix Ref1
2. VMPS RM1
3. VMPS 626R's w/ FST
4. Norh mini 9s

I like Onix Ref1  the most  because of the exotic glossy birdeye maple finish and they will easily pass the WAF test. BTW, Mrs HarleyMYK also picked Onix to be her favorite one too.

I prefer  the RM1 over the 626R because it had more bass.

Overall, I'll be happy with either Onix or VMPS in my setup.

I'd never stress the 626's in the bass dept: I'd run them with my pair of subs, X'd over at 70-80 hz.  This should really let 'em sing without strain.

Pretty curious about the RM-30's, though...

This is just a consideration for the 626's...  not to be taken personally... and my own observations.

I can attest the the 626's are incredibly articulate and provide surprisingly low bass.  I heard them yesterday and 'congested' was not a word I'd use to describe them.  However, the room was HEAVILY treated with foam and careful attention was paid to every aspect of that room.  My guess is the congested sound is probably a product of the midrange ribbon's reflections.  Just a guess.  It was the one part ...

The system that Carl is writing about is described here:
http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?action=systems;system=196.

The room treatment I applied  helps a lot to improve sonic detail and bass level. The best sound (smoothest) was obtained with the little Sharp SD-SH111 (digital amp/DVD player combo).

Hi Mark,

The 626R and the RM1 share the same midrange and treble drivers.  They also have the similar baffle width, (12" vs 10.5") so much of the sound will be quite similar.

Quote
The RM1 has 2 8" woofers and an 10" passive radiator so bass extends down to around 32Hz.

The 626R has a single 6.5" WCF (woven carbon fiber) woofer which specs out to a 42Hz.

A well tuned and placed RM1 will play slightly louder and of course deeper.

The bass of the 626R may be slightly tighter and dryer due to the "sti
Do the new RM1's not come with the 10" Mega Woofers?
