Best AA Iv'e seen (which is all but 4 since the mid 50's).

Thought the Jackman/Hatheway duet was great. Before getting into movies, she was training to be an opera singer.  :inlove:

I have to agree with Robin about Gran Torino. That movie really did a number on me. I wish Clint was about twenty years younger, cause I hate the idea of a world without his contributions to cinema. The guy gets better with age...I hope he's still got a little "more in the basement", to borrow from Rocky.

Maybe Clint will get a shot next year.  Another thing about this year's show that tweaked my curiosity was the nominated foriegn films and even some doc's.  These are recognized every year but there was just sumthin about this year's show.  To me, this year's production did what it was supposed to do better than ever which I take to be entertain, honor, and promote.  Gotta see The Wrestler, too.

As for Gran Torino, I'll be surprised if Clint Eastwood gets his well deserved recognition next year either but we'll just have to wait and see...................................

Cheers,
Robin

I thought that because Gran Torino "WAS" released in 2008, so it shouldn't be in 2009 in any way.  Otherwise, why would it have been "limit"-released in 2008 (to rush it in to qualify for the cycle)?  From what I understand (could be wrong), Gran Torino will not be eligible in 2009????  :duh:

That's correct...Gran Torino will not be eligible next year...

I didn't realize that both of them could sing as well as they did.

I agree it was a very good show.

Re: The Wrestler

How old is Mickey Rourke? He looks huge. Has he been hanging with A-Rod?
Didnt Stallone juice up to play his last Rambo film?

Looks like the academy got its groove back. Great ceremony, looked fabulous on HD, and moreover slumdog swept the awards!  :thumb: :thumb: Kate winslet finally broke the jinx and won her first oscar! Lets see if they can top this next year :)

Mickey will be 57 in September.  Yes, along with the botox and facelifts he's quite a changed person from the Diner and Rumblefish days.

I think the Academy Awards committee totally dropped the trophy this year by ignoring Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino. Not only did they turn their backs on public opinion but the movie was also ignored in the final credits of upcoming movies for next years Oscar considerations. There's something very wrong here but I haven't a clue as to what could be going on behind the scenes. As good as Slumyard Dog was, I personally don't feel it deserved the runaway award recognition that it received.

Cheers,
Robin

Slumyard Dog?  Ouch.   I agree about the miss on Gran Torino (great flick)....but I think the finale was a montage of yet-to-be-released movies, not movies too late to make this years awards.

  It took me about 12 hours to realise I had misspelled the movie title. My only excuse was I had just got up after snowblowing 14" of snow a few hours before and my mind was working at 40% capacity instead of it's normal 42%. It was an honest mistake Ted, I really did like the movie a lot but it was no way Picture of The Year for me. Slumdog Millionaire just didn't move or entertain me the way that Gran Torino did. :thumb:

Robin

Slumyard Dog.... :P

Here's a good dog movie for ya......http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1028532/

"This heartwarming true story is an American adaptation of a Japanese tale about a loyal dog named Hachiko. This very special friend would accompany his master to the train station every day and return each afternoon to greet him after work. Sadly his master departs one day, passes away and never returns to the station. Hachiko faithfully returns to the same spot at the station the very next day, and every day for the next nine years to wait for his beloved master. During his daily visits, Hachiko touches the lives of many who work near and commute through the town square. He teaches the local people love, compassion and above all unyielding loyalty. Today, a bronze statue of Hachiko sits in his waiting spot outside the Shibuya station in Japan as a permanent reminder of his devotion and love."

Robin- Lest we forget, the Clint mon was recognized for Mystic River, Unforgiven, and the Iwo Jima duo one of which was in Japanese.  How risky was that?  The man wants what he wants and will spend his own dough.  I vividly remember that shot of him standing on the hill outside of town in Unforgiven talkin to the kid lips chapped all to hell.  I know Gran Torino struck a chord with you but, bro, Eastwood is a man amongst men in his sport.  Actors talk about how casual he is to work for and look at the results.  My guess is he is much loved in his industry and I reckon he ain't done, either.

You obviously haven't seen the movie yet Jim, elsewise you'd be talking about today,,, not yesterday. :D Have you even seen Slumdog Millionaire yet? Maybe once you've seen both movies, you can get back to me on your thoughts about the 8 out of 10 Oscar movie winner compared to the "Unforsaken One".

Cheers,
Robin

Haven't seen "Slumyard" or any of the nominees.  Saw Gran Torino.  Don't think it was as good as Mystic River but probably I can get back to you in one sense already.  It occurs to me that the Academy had some kind of agenda on that.  Maybe encouraging new blood, invention.  I'll be admiring Marisa Tomei first chance I get.  Thanks.

Certainly it was shocking that Gran Torino wasn't even nominated for an award.  But with that being the case, what nominated film did you think deserved the Best Picture award more than Slumdog Millionaire?

I've already stated that for me, and I saw a lot of movies in 2008, Gran Torino stood out as the best film of 2008 for me. What other films deserved Best Picture isn't an issue for me as I've already stated numerous times that the clear head up winner wasn't even recognized and yes Jim, I feel there was a clear cut agenda for this years Oscars but I won't pursue it due to AudioCircle's no politics rule. End of story Phil.

But Robin, that wasn't what I asked you.  I asked that among the nominated films, which one do you think deserved to win the most?  The question was asked purely out of curiousity, with no intention of arguing about Gran Torino.  In other words, which of these movies below did you think was the Best Picture?

Slumdog Millionaire
Benjamin Button
The Reader
Frost/Nixon
Milk
