Has anyone upgraded from the Modwright 999ES to the Modwright 9100ES?  What improvements did you notice?  I am considering moving to the 9100ES and just wondered if someone would care to share their opinion on this upgrade.

I too would like to hear some comparisons of these two players.

I went from a 999ES to a Transporter - so sorry can't help.
Best bet is to call Dan directly and ask, all I do know is that he considered the 9100 was a substantial improvement.

I did it.  Substantial.  The 9100 with the tube power supply is really out of this world.  It is both more detailed and more natural/warmer sounding at the same time.  It's not a flavor difference, but an absolute improvement.  PM me and I'd be happy to tell you more.  Unfortunately, I never had them side by side since I sold one to finance the other.  But the differences were immediately noticeable even with a few weeks lag.

My late and great friend Normanality (RIP) purchased a ModWright 9100ES with the tube rectified PS, and I bought his ModWright Sony 999ES with the Solid State power supply.  After getting the OK from Dan that nothing would blow up, we tried the tube PS in place of the SS PS on the 999ES.  Depth, separation and detail improved.  We put the 9100ES in and it got even better, so much that I had to have one….and still do.  To save some coin, I bought a show demo.

The old thread.

EDIT:  Just a FYI.  My memory is fuzzy about what SS power supplies for the 999ES can be directly replaced with tube power supplies, so anyone considering trying it should talk to Dan first.

I think there are at least 2 versions of the tubed power supply for the 9100.  I know this because Dan recently fixed a problem on my 9100 and upgraded the tubed power supply while he was at it.

You could upgrade the power supply for the 999 to the tubed one.  But that will cost you.  I think the used priced spread between the 999 and the 9100 is about $1000.  Have you also considered the modded Transporter?  I think Dan compared the 9100 and the Transporter and concluded that it was pretty close.

For another perspective, check the positive-feedback.com archives for Bob Levi's reviews and follow-ups for both the 999ES and the 9100.  He still uses both players so you could drop him an email and ask a few questions.
