Three Way OB with Peerless & Fountek
« on: 11 Mar 2009, 12:13 pm »
Hi everyone,

here`s my latest 3way OB loudspeaker project in a beautiful cabinet made by Bozidar Kroflic, from Celje, Slovenia. Since we both love the sound of dipoles, this is what we came up with. Photos were taken before I started to measure them and develop the crossover. The drivers are following:

tweeter - Fountek Neo CD 3.0 MB

midrange - Peerless HDS-134NOMEX

woofer - Peerless SLS-315

Cheers!

Hey- very cool!   How are you liking that Peerless woofer?   I use only 1 per side and I like it a lot.  That double stack has to be great.

Routing the wires inside the baffle is very clever.  Never seen that before.

What size inductor are you using on the low pass?

yes, that Peerless duo is awesome! Between 40-300 Hz everything sounds extremely clear (the baffle is very stiff), with proper weight, blah blah,  you know...
The inductor is ten mH.

hi I'm looking for a good pair of bass drivers myself to complement my atc mids and scanspeak tweeters, the peerless look like they could fill the hole...how do you think they compair to the popular Eminence 15''s
as for build quality i know they must have the edge but what brings them up in the sound department ?
thanks..mike

Cool!   My single Peerless will play flat down to 40Hz then drop off fast.  Not to bad, really.  Baffle is 15"x28"

10mH, that's a wopper for two drivers in parallel (4 ohms).  But it can take that much to get a good tonal balance. Nice work!

Fivestring,

I like your system configuration, personally I perfer  a more effcient drivers.

Questions please:

a There is a dip around 1Khz, do you think this would make much diffrence to the sound?

b In general terms do you normally design on-axis Freq. response curve to be flat or dip around 1-2dB above certain freq.?

Cheers.

Hi, I haven`t heard them in direct comparison, but my vote goes for Peerless, their build quality is excellent, they have a reasonably long throw capabilities, a shorting ring and large holes under the spider, for venting the VC, but I believe Eminence is also a good choice...

I tried 6.8 but felt it was too dry sounding. Yes, I chase the tonal balance first,
thanks!

Fivestring,
I like your system configuration, personally I prefer  a more efficient drivers.

Look, the way I see it, more efficiency could be only had by increasing the effective radiating area, no pro drivers with high midband efficiency would help here.
The dip around 1khz comes from the baffle shape, but isn`t too severe IMHO. This dip is negligible off axis and if anything, I prefer this dip over bump, since most of the time I had to tame those. Most cone mids have increased odd order harmonic distortions in this region (especially near 1.5 khz), so this dip might compensate for some of their "screaming"
In general terms I prefer a slightly downward tilting frequency response, but it depends on driver/room/amp combinations...

Ever thought of wings / U shape?

It has wings, asymetrical.   To get any lower, it would need a deep U.  But I have found that to bring up only the mid bass, and THAT I have plenty of!  :o

Getting it to go down another octave, or even a 1/2 is going to be tough.  I don't even know how low the Peerless will play in a box.  Flat to 40 Hz isn't too bad, really.

I'm gonna make a new thread since i dont want to ruin this one (will edit this post with link when done).

More efficient speakers are a design trade off. Considering the doubling of power needed for every 3db increase, output levels become impractical quickly in a commercial venue. Running at 1000W it takes 8000W to increase 9db. If the numbers work in O.B., I would usually choose a less efficient hifi type driver.

I think the quarterwave resonance plays there (see MJK paper on U and H frames). Where is crossed? I know i'll need a 4th order at around 100-150hz.

Could you send me pictures of your OBs? :)

Hiya,

Can you tell me which freq are the peerless crossed?
And if you try with taller wings (I suspect it can bring the bass a bit lower, but resonances depends on the XO point.)
