Adding additional hard drives
« on: 20 Jun 2008, 01:24 pm »
I have a WD my book premium edition ll hard drive in raid array that is almost full. How do I add a second hard drive to use for my itunes collection? The first is also used for my itunes collection.

You can get an external HD and hook it through the USB port. If you don't have enough slots you can buy adapters. An external also makes your music portable.

Or you can get an internal if you have an open slot in your tower. Usually you have more than one power connector. Connect the power connector and I think you have to set the dip switch to slave. Should come with instructions.

IMO an external is the way to go.

An array of one disk?  Do you have software raid or a raid controller?  Do you have available drive slot on your computer?

I think its two disks in an external HD that you can set up in an array. Through Firewire or USB 2.

Gotcha.  Then the next question would be is it setup in JBOD or RAID0, or RAID1.

If you want to add to an existing array, it has to be RAID5 or RAID6.  Most likley, you'll just have to add another drive outside the array and create a shortcut to the other drive in your existing folder structure.

Right now the external two drive unit is set to raid 1. There does not seem to be an option for raid 5or 6. What now?

OK. You could buy a same size drive, unraid, copy music to new drive, then software raid 1 to old drive. Are you on a mac?

Unless you have a hardware raid, then you can use that. Right Bryan?

I have a PC and would like to get the same size drive. Can I unraid old drive, copy to new drive and go back to raid 1 on both units? How can I use two units both in raid 1 so they act as one drive?

Assuming you want to retain your existing raid, leave it as-is and add an additional drive/raid, then follow the steps in this thread:

On a side note, striping and/or mirroring your 'playback' drive(s) really doesn't offer any intrinsic benefit. Separate backup drives are key to library integrity.
