Practicality of using 3 centers across the front?

This is a set up I've wondered about off and on for some time. I am re doing the stereo/home theater area with new cabinets and going back to stereo for the subs. The last time I used a pair of subs was after the Forces just came out. I have a moderate size room. My interest in using a pair of centers for main left and rights is partly cosmetic. I envision a slab of maple or cherry in a low table type set up maybe 16-18 inches wide and 20 inches high to hold our plasma moniter and running about 8 feet long. Instead of putting stand mounted satellites just in front of the table it seems like it could work quite well to place a couple of 6-12 inch stands bringing two center type speakers up to ear height a foot or so above the table.

Anyone try this set up or have a comment? I'd be looking at something about the size of the Saphire XCL with tweeter above mid as a basic requirement for the center design. The ACIs could be a  possibility or perhaps the paradigm C-3 signature. Ive got a pair of the small paradigm S1 satellites and they are quite good but I think ultimately I'd like to have just a bit more bass to bring the crossover down a bit.

Any thoughts or experienes aprecciated,

Larry:

We actually designed the XLC with this in mind. All final listening testing was done as stereo pairs. It makes an excellent setup.

Thanks Mike, you could probably guess that I am reading the on line tip series you all put out by email. Do you use them traditionally otherwise, raised for tweeter about ear height and toed in to taste?

I have to say that it's nice to stop in and find ACI to have some of the same personal style or personality it did when I used to wear your catalogs out so many years ago just reading them over and over and planning the system I'd get when I finally got some money accumulated.

 Larry:

Well they say old dogs don't change much      Ideally the three speakers would be as close to ear height as possible. Putting them right under a projection screen works really well. If they are a bit low, then tilting them up a bit is just what the Dr. orders.

Conversely, why not use a single conventional L or R speaker for the center?

Just a thought

It's a great thought   :D  A lot of our customers opt for a either three Sapphire XLs across the front or three Emerald XLs.
