upgrade Silverline Minuet speaker
« on: 15 May 2008, 01:35 pm »
hi
I just received my Silverline Minuet and (but) cold out of the box they sounded  less
than my cheapy Eltax kitchen speakers but with  modified X-over.

SO i opened the speakerbox and found  ehh non audiophile capacitors
One ( found in many popular mid fi speakers) cap in series with the tweeter
needs  replacement the "Spirit" I found them also in the original Eltax

with what value can i replace it? Is this 475uF or 0.47uF?? and J  means 5%?
this is the 100V version, once used by the Eltlax, the Minuet uses the 200V version
Does it has to be this large value when it is a 475 uf cap? the tweeter has this cap in series and one inductor to ground (parallel); the tweeter takes over at 3500 hz. 475uF seems very high for 3500 hz?
there are also two inductors and 2 resistors, The midwoofer uses 2 electrolytic caps,  and an inductor in series

I would think that it is 4.7 uf.

.47uF... should be about right for a crossover frequency of 3500Hz into an 8ohm tweeter.

Hey!

I think you are looking at a 2nd order xover there.:D

For the cap value.....  4.7uf  5% tolerance :D

Take care,

Yeap...I believe Buddy is right...4.7uF
See the crossover guide here: http://www.partsexpress.com/resources/crossover-component-selection-guide.cfm

I had a tweeter burn out on me, and was running a temp with .47uf cap for what I thought was 7KHz. ,this was a 4ohm tweeter though. Looking at the guide I now see I was way off...

Great thanks Mark, ppl

i would everybody then who has (a) cheapy cap(s) in her or his speakers, advise
to replace it for at least a very affordable Soniccap generation 1 or 2 or better

I searched better on the internet and found this:

"The capacitors marked with three digits are similar to resistors in that the first two digits need to be multiplied by the third digit in order to obtain the value in PICOFARADS (pF) as above. The letter is present to indicate the tolerance of the component.  So 100 would be 10pF multiplied by one (100)i.e. 10pF.  103 is 10pF multiplied by 1000 (103) ie 10,000pF or to put is another way 0.01 microfarads.   "  http://www.arar93.dsl.pipex.com/mds975/Content/components01.html

So if I use above example 475J is 47x 105 pF = 4,7 uF 5%

CAPACITOR TOLERANCE TABLE

F    1%
G    2%
J    5%
K    10%

Sonicap's are good bang for the buck IMO. Probably cost you about $25 for a pair of 4.7 Gen 1's. Shipping may be a different story for you though, Kyrill. But it would be a relatively small package.
