Congratulations Adrian,
Glad to hear they arrived in excellent shape. Hope the Krell is just a fuse. Keep us posted.

Thanks Steve,

I just got back from Zaw's, and they didn't want to just try another fuse, since I reported a burning small. So I had to pay the $50 shop fee to have them check it out. I should know something later today or Monday. I might have time to quickly connect the speaker jumpers and try the Threshold full range on the Monoliths before I head into work.

Chris is coming over Sat. morning to test the speaker outputs and make sure that they didn't cause the amp to blow. I just got a $252 bill from Zaw for the Krell. I'd better not risk blowing another amp, so no Monolith sound until I get all this sorted out.

Jeez Adrian, talk about having the wind let out of your sails.
That's rough man. Having cool stuff you can't play with. It doesn't get any worse than that.

Well, that's the story of my life...

Actually, I realized something tonight. I think that karma has caught up with me, and I was just getting too sweet of a deal on these speakers. Something had to happen to take me down a notch or two. First, I see an outstanding ad for the Monoliths with the active crossover for $2500 on audiogon. The guy lets me plop down a $500 deposit and waits patiently for the balance. Several months go by before he calls up again, and when he does he offers me an additional $500 off if I can swing the deal within 2 weeks. I was having auto problems at the time, and knew that I was about to lose the speakers. Then a buddy of mine fronts the money for a preamp of mine that I'm trying to get sold on audiogon, and will let me pay him back whenever it does sell. I get offered a $250 shipping rate, which turned out to be way cheaper than driving up to Michigan and back with another GAS buddy(Joe at Digital Options). Then finally, for some unknown reason, the seller drops the price another $500, making the total package $1500 plus $250 shipping!! Unbelievable. So the amp blowing was just payback, I figure.

That's not really 'bad karma', Adrian. That's simply crappy luck.
If it were bad karma, it would be all those evil things you've done in the past just now catching up with you. But I doubt that's the case, you seem too nice to have racked up a big 'payback' list.

Yep, maybe so. Chris will be here in a few minutes and I'll know more about the speakers soon.

Hey Joe,

Great news!! The speakers are working properly, and I still managed to have enough equipment for active bi-amping without the other Krell monoblock. Chris tested the speaker outputs, and found that everything looked fine. We don't know why that Krell blew. So for right now, I'm using Scott's Spectro Acoustics amp on the woofers, and the Threshold on the panels, with the Crown crossover filling in until I get the Martin Logan Exos active crossover. In the few minutes of listening that we were able to get in while Chris was still here, we could tell that this is the start of something wonderful. You could already hear the improved clarity of the Monoliths, especially because I'm no longer running through an external plus an internal crossover network. I have quite a long way to go with placement, tilt, crossover points, levels, etc., but that's part of the fun. I can also tell that video sound is going to be awesome, with the Quests for the rears(overkill, I know) but the picture will need to be quite a bit smaller to project between the Monoliths. We all have to make sacrifices, right? I have to go teach right now, but I'll be back to play with the setup for the rest of the evening. I'm feeling pretty good right now.

Adrian,
I'm glad the speakers are working, I had hoped nothing happened in shipping. Loose wires, etc.
The amp going out is weird though. I guess something was ready to go?
Let us know how they sound after some serious listening.

Thanks Joe,

I did quite a bit of listening before going to Rolla on Tuesdaythis week. On the way back into town today, I had a car accident, but I walked away from it safely, and didn't hit any other cars. I'm in a rental right now for the next few days. The Krell amp that blew has been repaired, and it's back home now. I'll hook it up later tonight or tomorrow. I'm getting great results with the speakers already. I've been fighting upper midrange and treble glare and brightness, but it toned done when I moved the speakers further away from the side walls. It could also be that I'm finally hearing that my Crown crossover is really not that great. I should be receiving the ML Exos active xover(which should help with sound quality quite a bit), but the seller has been quiet lately. I wonder what's going on. More later...

Adrian,
Glad to hear you're alright. You just got the car, is it repairable?

The insurance company will determine whether or not to proceed with repairs after they've had a chance to look at the damage. The tow truck driver said that they would probably total it out, based on it being a '99. We'll see.
