Hi.
I'm just starting to mix the material for IGN III (International Guitar Night) and it occurred to me that maybe some of you fine people who listened to IGN II would enjoy the opportunity to have input on the sound of the new one, IGN III.
So ... if there was something - anything - you would like changed about IGN II, now's the time to speak.
Would you like it brighter? Closer sounding? Less room sound? Less compression?

All input would be welcome.

I have been instructed to use the IGN II sound as a template, so that will be my starting point, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't accept input from some of the more discerning music consumers out there!

Thanks. :thumb:

for those who don't know what I'm talking about, here's a thread: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=49181.0

Russell-  Take this with a grain of salt cause when it comes to technical stuff, I don’t know WTF I’m talking about.  I have an old BIS recording for a chamber size group featuring guitar and flute soloists.  There is exactness to this that you can’t help but notice.   It was recorded with two Blumien configured ribbons on a tree in front of and above the players and it sounds exactly like you would expect looking at the layout of the group on the back of the album cover, or if you were seated in the first few rows.  This was made in a fairly narrow room with high ceilings and a hard floor (also pictured) and I expect that matters.   I can hear around everything, even under everything.   Instruments are very well separated and palpable.  It does not, however, have the warmth of tone I hear on IGN II.  I could be down for more focus.  I could be for more of a 360 degree separation (not relating here) and radiation of instruments.  But, at what cost?  Well, not very much, really.  The only trade off acceptable to me is perspective.  And you can open up the dynamics for my two cents, also.

I expect there are special considerations to made regards every size venue and factors I know nothing about.  Not to mention interested parties.  If you didn’t change a thing, I’m good.   I’m always interested to know how a recording is made.  Me, and a lot of guys here, I expect.

Thank you for the insight, your good work, and, did you ever get to San Francisco?

Thanks for taking the time, Jim.

When you say "I could be down for more focus" I am guessing you might like to hear less of the main stereo mic (which picks up the room) and more of the spot mics.
Then again, when you say you would like more of a 360º separation I interpret that as a little more width. This is how I first presented it to the producer, but he wanted to hear "all musicians in each ear" which I interpreted as "less width" so I made it narrower and he was happy. I would have preferred the original, myself.

You realize if I use less compression the overall sound will be more open - which could also be described as "emptier". Would that be OK to a small degree? I think I could make it work.

In retrospect, the sound of IGN II is, if anything, a little on the too reverberant side of ideal, so I will investigate just touch less room with the new one.

We didn't get to San Francisco yet, but may well do later this year. Loose plans have us renting a place in the south of France around Perpignan for a few weeks late May/early June so that is taking out time now; SF will be easy to plan by contrast.

360 degree separation wouldn’t apply to your guitarists as they are pretty much on the same plane.  I didn’t make that very clear.  Sorry.   I meant whenever players are positioned side to side, diagonally, and fore and aft from one another.  I like it when that can be recreated in my room.  Is simple real time miking germane to that sort of recreation, I’m wondering.  And would there be a loss of anything?  I’m thinking, yeah, probably, that if it weren’t for the spot mikes we wouldn’t have that lovely tone and body.  All your thoughts just as they are sound potentially positive to me.  Seriously.  I look forward to the results.  Thanks and best wishes.

Russell....

Can you make those guitarists sound a little like.... Jimi .... :guitar:
maybe a little wha-wha pedal..... (now I'm J/K)

You did a nice job on IGN II....depth, sound....all very good. I always like to hear the details in their playing....the real sounds....good or bad. I'm sure whatever you come up with will sound good....you had good musicians to work with....good luck...
