Its spinning now....sounds very good.... :guitar:

Nice job Russell (for those that don't know...he's a member here). :thumb:

"International Guitar Night is the annual mini-festival that allows you to hear in one evening four of the best acoustic guitarists on the planet, providing an inspirational experience for guitarists and guitar-lovers alike. There are always an intriguing range of styles on display during International Guitar Night.."

I've also found news of a U.S. tour of these four guitarists...starting soon ....Link...

Keep up the good work Russell.....

Thanks, Ole Bean. I ordered D'Gary with whom I'm familiar and to sample Russell's talents and another recommendation from the Circle- Natsange (Frans Bak)- from MJ, I believe.  Just now.  Cheers.

Thanks for the mention, Chris. :thumb:

Jim - you should know that I didn't record any of D'Gary's other CDs, just this one, so if you buy anything else it is not my work.

Also the music playing in the background when you go to the Hershel Freeman link at the end of Chris's first post is not from this recording for some reason but from others by the named artists.

Sure, Chris.

It was recorded in a medium sized theatre (about 600 seats) on stage with the 4 guitarists in an arc. There was a main stereo mic - a Royer SF12 crossed figure of eight ribbon - around 10 feet away at the focal point of the arc and about 4 feet high. This was to get the basic stereo image of the 4 guitarists and capture the basic room sound (which was substantial since there was a fairly loud house speaker system).

Since the main array was Blumlein XY, this will work quite well with the various derived-rear-channel systems like Dolby HX Pro or equivalent, to give mainly room sound in the rear channels. The guitars were individually miced with modified Oktava MC 012s with hypercardioid capsules at about 12 inches. The two effects boxes from Clive Carroll and D'Gary were DI'ed.

The whole thing was recorded using a Metric Halo MIO 2882 (pretty well the core of my set up) into a Mac Power Book G4 through a True Systems Precision 8 mic pre and monitored during recording on a pair of Etymotic Research ER4S in-ear earphones.

Mixing and mastering was done through my studio's ADCOM GFP 750 preamp (in  passive mode) into a pair of NuForce Ref 9SE V2s and a pair of SP Technology Timepiece 2.1s supplemented with a pair of Hsu subs crossed in at around 35 Hz and basically flat to 18Hz, powered by an Adcom GFA 545 II.

No additional reverb was necessary and compression was sparingly used.

Chris,

Thanks for the tip on this one from one of our own here.

I notice Amazon says "preorder" due Jan 15th.  Since you already have it, did you get it from CD Universe as "in stock" or are you just special :) ?

Tom

Chris is "just" special!

I sent him one of my promo copies in partial return for a very generous gesture on his part a couple of years ago and also because I thought he would appreciate it as a guitarist.

Thanks for the kind words, carusoracer.

I'll respond in an hour, woodsyi, I have to attend to some work first.

Russell,

I'm sure Chris very much deserved it as he's always the first one to help folks out here and clearly generous with his gear.

It's also really nice to see someone mastering with the SP Techs.  Hopefully more studio folks will catch on to them in due time too.  It can only improve what we get as consumers.  I told Bob he really should make a sales to call to Chuck at Sweetwater Sound, right here in his own back yard.  You never know what might happen.

I listen to tons of acoustic guitar music (big Michael Hedges and Pat Metheny fan), so will definitely pick this one up on Amazon.  Very much looking forward to it.  Thanks for your backgrounder too.

Then you'll like this Cd Tom....and you'll get to check out how well Russell employs his craft. As I said....Russell did a nice job.....and if he didn't....I would not have posted.
After you guys have a listen....please post you comments on the sound. And with Russell's post you now know what he used to record it with.

One other question Russell.....how many tracks did you use ?

Thanks again for the Cd....

I used 9 tracks for this, Chris - the stereo pair in front, 4 spot mics and a mono and a stereo DI from the two guys using pickups and effects boxes (Clive and D'Gary).

woodsyi here's a site from one of my clients:

http://members.shaw.ca/gclements/

I recorded all of his CDs except his first, "Mingus, Mancini and Us". There are a few samples you can listen to.

My favorite albums of his are "Above and Below" and "Bounce".

Paul Cantelon is very popular with some. I have recorded all his solo piano albums since 1993 and he is doing a lot of big-time movie music these days. The sound samples on the site selling him are no so good - mono and distorted - but the actual thing sounds good. Pure Blumlein with my treasured Speiden and Royer ribbon mics. You should google him because I just tried and I got a lot of disfunctional links. If you PM'd me with your email I could send you an mp3 track.

International Guitar Night II: D'Gary / Clive Carroll / Miguel De La Bastide / Brian Gore (2007)

Very very good recording Russell.  :notworthy: Having just received my CD and storing it in my hard drive library, I first need to thank Chris for the headsup.  :thumb: Acoustical guitar has always been a favorite of mine and this CD will be getting some serious play time. The recording itself is superb for a live recording, no coughing from the audience or that sorta stuff that you'd hear in Patricia Barber's Cafe' Blue CD. I'm real glad to have ran into this CD for sure.  :D

Cheers,
robin

I must have done this wrong.  Having read Sat's glee at getting his copy, I checked my mailbox.  Nope.  So, I tracked my order at Amazon and got a messgae that it wouldn't be shipped til 2/14 (along with Natsange- Franz Bak).  That's a cool feeling.
