I don't like pots as a rule, is the Clarinet 50k balance control pot always in the circuit, or does it have a detente position where it is bypassed?

If not, could I simply solder up a simple on off on switch work to perform bypass operation?

The detent position does not bypass.  You can jumper it out.  I believe the info in given in manual.
