Robert,

The caps arrived yesterday.  Luckily, it was just under 100F yesterday, which meant that I could solder them in (my workbench is outside).

My Cornet2 sounded weak at first, but has quickly regained much of its sound.  I expect that once the caps break-in to their new home, things will sound even better.  I expect that even if components may be burned-in in one system, they will need a burn-in period whenever their operating conditions change.  I also expect that cap orientation can cause burn-in requirements, for example, the sides of the caps are not labelled, and I may have their polarity reversed compared to your system.

Anyway, I am very, very pleased with them.  After only playing for a couple of hours, it is very clear that they are a superior capacitor.  My guess is that they'll continue to improve.

Thank-you,
Charlie

Hey Charlie,

I love it when there is (finally) a hint of fall in the air.

How about an update/review after these caps burn-in? I also put the Mundorf's in my Cornet2 but never did a comparison.

Hello Charlie!  Yes, those caps rock!  I have Mundorf's in my Cornet 2 also.  The ones I sold were from my Clarinet.  The other tweaks that REALLY made a difference were raising my heater voltage to 6.3V and loading the cartridge(mc) per Abe's instructions.  Of course building a Piccolo would take care of the cartridge loading.  I plan on building one soon and selling off my Denon 300AU.  I grew up in Tucson and my wife & I graduated from U of A.  I love to visit and eat at Mi Nidito and the original El Charro downtown.  I spent many days drinking beer and swimming at The Crack, Hutches pool and 7 Falls back in the 80's.  By the way, the other 2 caps are now sold.  Peace.  Robert

Hi Robert,

Mi Nidito and El Charro are still going strong. I haven't been to Hutches Pool since the 2006 flood, that trail has been closed for a while because everything was washed out.

We had 5" of monsoon rain this July, no massive flooding this year but still too dangerous and hot to hike the low trails during the monsoon season. This summer 2 hikers at 7 Falls were swept away in a flash flood on Aug 6th, one was a 25 year old lifeguard at Davis-Monthan AFB trying to save a 19 year old woman. You can never tell what is happening higher up in the Catalina Mountains.

On July 31, 2006 a massive flood changed Sabino Canyon forever, the end of the road where the tram turns around, a rest area with benches, and a stone restroom completely disappeared under huge boulders.  http://www.azstarnet.com/news/141817.php It is a amazing sight to see.

Here is a photo I found, this is the end of the road looking toward the bathrooms. You can just see the road on the right.

Yikes!  Thanks for posting the picture.  I had no idea.  Tucson is an amazing place.  My parents still live there.  Years ago an owl ate the family dog.  Sorry for the off topic posts!  Peace.  Robert

Wayne,

You just have to brag don't you?     We only got around 0.5 inch of rain out of the monsoon.  We could see rain to the East on the Superstitions (around three miles away), rain to the South over SanTan.  We mainly just got dust!

The Mundorf caps present quite a difference than the Dynacap.  At first, they sounded weak by comparison.  The Dynacaps in the Aikido somewhat levelled the playing-field between Phono and CD.  Now that the Mundofrs have had some burn-in, I really like them.  They appear very transparent, but forceful.  At first I thought that the bass was a little recessed, so I went back to the Sylvania 5V4GA (the RCA counterpart gives lighter bass).  Then on Sunday, I played Jethro Tull's Songs From The Woods and the bass felt boomy.  When I moved the speakers four inches further away from the back wall (to a total of around 16 inches), the bass became tamed.  Last night, I played Jethro Tull's Heavy Horses - I don't have many of their albums, but I have the former as CD (and vinyl back in the UK with my other records) and managed to buy both SFTW and Heavy Horses as used LP's for $3.00 ea.  Anyway, their music has a tendency to include a rather full range of frequencies and considerable transients.  They sound great!

In my opinion, the Dynacaps have added a wonderful tonal quality to my system.  They are noted for their midrange, which to my ears seems to be lacking from many CD's in my collection.  The SS AKSA55N  also benefits from active preamplification especially in its bass responses.  These caps fit in best (in my system) in my preamp, although I have not tried them in the AKSA (this would mean quite different values on the AKSA output for driving 8R speakers).

For the Cornet2, the Mundorfs seem perfect as the output capacitor.  They are solid players and don't appear to have any biases across the audible frequency spectrum.  I would certainly recommend them for a high quality Cornet2.  I remember Bruce Anderson (maker of one of the first Aikido preamps) telling me that as DIYers, we are not working to a profit margin and so can justify using the best quality components that we can afford.  While I would avoid boutique resistors for the Cornet2 (maybe the odd wirewound in critical positions), the best sonics have been achieved in my Cornet2 via the PSU, capacitors and of course, the tubes.

Regards,
Charlie

And Tucson is cooler too.  Wink2

Thanks for your critique of the Mondorfs, they are a great cap. I use a 12AU7A GE branded CBS, it tightens up the 5V4GA, gotta love the bass the C2 has.
