Sending LARGE files
« on: 12 Jul 2007, 03:48 am »
What's the best way to send large files, like 20-50 MB.  A friend of mine and I are going to start recording stuff over each other's recordings and the files will be large.  Ideally, I would like to maybe have a place out there we can upload stuff too and keep it there vs. sending files one at a time to each other.

I was thinking maybe setting up an FTP.  How much do you think one of those would run a month, with at the most 500 MB to 1 GB of storage?

Thanks!

HI, there are services on the Internet for sending large file in an email like manner. Too lazy to find them right now. Some of these services are even free but from what I've seen, they are certainly not expensive.

Your FTP solution could also work with a bit of setup but I have no experience with that.

Edit: searching Google with your topic description will give you a number of relevant hits.

FTP is the ticket, no restrictions on file size. webhost4life.com is $5 month, with at least a gig storage. There are lots of good hosting deals now. Look for unlimited transfer bandwidth. You can use internet explorer as your FTP host then it is just drag and drop. PM if you need any help.

If you have a flakey host or internet connection or slow 'puter, you might make use of a download manager program that can pick up where you left off if the download is accidentally interuppted. I can't remember any in particular, but a geek site like techspot can point you to the best ones available now.

You'll find 16 bit WAVs are more than adequate for home recording acoustics and budget recording equipment. Once you get into hi rez, the FTP thing might not work so well, the files just get so huge, especially with multitrack.

I think Finale has a collaboration feature that you could use for compositional aspects of the project, but not for recording tracks.

Sounds like fun!

I upload large files to a folder on my website, then email the link to my customer. But you don't even need a website to do this, just a domain name and a hosting company. The bonus is you can also use the hosting company for email and have your own personal email that will never change like p@pjchappy.com.

HostPC works just fine, 2000 MB storage, $35 a year.

I've been really happy with 1and1.com - they're a big commerical hosting company that got into personal hosting a few years ago and I've had an account there for around three years (since they opened their personal service).

$4/mo gets you 10GB of space, 300GB of transfers and a domain name
$5/mo gets you 120GB or storage, 1200GB of transfers and two domain names

Over the time I've been there, they've periodically increased my various quotas to levels that are kind of crazy (I'm grandfathered into some account level that doesn't exist anymore, similar to their developer level).

There's "yousendit.com" You can send up to 100MB at a time for free. If you have multiple files, they must be in a folder and compressed w/ zip or stuffit. You can pay fees and get more options. I use it all the time. Not as fast as direct FTP, but a lot less hassle.
