What are your goals? size constraints? priorities?  room size? music preference?

not sure what my goals are, but don't want anything too big. I listen to rock, jazz, and trance mainly.

There's numerous speakers in a thread at HTGuide that can be copied. The designs I don't know about but the two mods and numerous other people are very adept at speaker design. That would be the first place I'd look. As a matter of fact I'm sure I'll build one of the speakers on that thread. You'll find it under "Missions Accomplished" in the Mission Possible area.

For a grand I should add you can build an excellent pair of speakers. Best wishes on this. Whatever you do kick yourself in the ass to get going because when you're done you'll most likely be very happy you did it that way. I know I'm super happy with the subs I've built.

A $1000 budget for kit is quite a good sum of money for speaker kit. Anyway, let us know how it turn out :D

Take care,

Don't forget to look at RAW Acoustics HT-3 and Gr Research OB-5 -- I believe these are about the right range (Both have circles here)

Like others have noted you have a dauntingly deep vault of choices.  That is why I asked my questions in hope of narrowing the field some, which you only sort of helped with.   You didn't mention your priorities of imaging, soundstage, accuracy, lack of any hint of bite, extention (both high and/or lows), etc, etc.

I own a pair of the speakers that warner mentioned, the Modula MTM designed by Jon Marsh of htguide.com. They are incredibly good speakers for a fair amount less than $1000.  You can pick primo parts and hire out the cabinet work for less than $1000.  They can be driven really really loud without strain, but they don't have the deepest bass as per the original design. They weren't meant to. They are however satisfying without a sub...that is the way I listen to them now.  (no speaker with 6 1/2" speakers offer deep bass).

I have the A/V-3 from GR Research and they are incredible for much less then your budget.  With $1000 you should definitely look at other models in the GR Research list, the OB line is supposed to be quite a notch above my A/V-3 so I can just dream how good they must sound...
