Like others have noted you have a dauntingly deep vault of choices. That is why I asked my questions in hope of narrowing the field some, which you only sort of helped with. You didn't mention your priorities of imaging, soundstage, accuracy, lack of any hint of bite, extention (both high and/or lows), etc, etc.
I own a pair of the speakers that warner mentioned, the Modula MTM designed by Jon Marsh of htguide.com. They are incredibly good speakers for a fair amount less than $1000. You can pick primo parts and hire out the cabinet work for less than $1000. They can be driven really really loud without strain, but they don't have the deepest bass as per the original design. They weren't meant to. They are however satisfying without a sub...that is the way I listen to them now. (no speaker with 6 1/2" speakers offer deep bass).
