New open baffle project?
« on: 20 Apr 2007, 02:33 pm »
Okay, I built a hybrid first. I built an open baffle MTM using 5.25" peerless buyouts and reinforced the low end with another pair of the 5.25s in a box tuned to about 50hz. I love them! Actually, I can't stop listening to them.

I have a Dayton Quattro 15" driver that I received free from a friend, and there are plenty of people or ways to get ahold of these for pretty cheap so I have two. I'm looking to build an open baffle using the SEAS P18RNX, a Aurum Cantus G2si, and am undecided about the bass driver.

Has anyone used the quattro 15 for an open baffle bass driver? If not, any inexpensive solutions?

Thanks for any information.

We already knew that you would like OB speakers. :thumb:

No need to ask questions about drivers you already have, just cut a piece of wood and listen.
You will be the best judge, your ears, your room, your tastes...etc.

Welcome to AC!  Welcome even more to the circle dedicated to open baffle speakers!

Do you have a link to the specs for the Dayton Quatro, I have not heard of them before.

All the best,

Rudolf

Blair,
I have no experience with the quatro 15 but you could build a H-frame for them like the one I built:http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=39094.0
Should easily work up to 100 Hz (or even 200 Hz) and will take much less room than an OB of same efficiency. I would estimate at least the same bass as from a 4 feet wide flat baffle.

Thanks everyone for the quick and enthusiastic responses. First off, here is a link to my progress as an open baffle fan:

Here is the link to the quattro:

I know the Q is way too low for this type of application, but I'm planning on using 2 per side possibly. I'm going to mount one to see what it will do as suggested earlier in the responses. What I'm trying to build is similar to the JAMO open baffle. I'm going to build a 2.5" thick baffle out of MDF and make the mid/tweeter cabinet out of cocobola and maple also 2.5" thick. I'm just wondering with the Fs of the driver being about 33 hz and the spl being about 90db, if one or two of these would be audible enough to keep up with the mids and highs while maintaining quite a bit of bass reinforcement. I love my smaller open baffles, but the bass is a tad light for my tastes. I'm 28 :D. Not like gang banging rap music 28, but still too dumb to ralize that louder isn't always better   Anyway, That is the proposed project so far.

Thanks for all the feedback!

Not bad, and since you own them, probably a good starting point!

Biamping with a plate amp I assume, for the subs?

Well, not really. It will be passive crossed as a three way. There is a program out there Jeff B designed called "The edge" that allows you to model a driver's open reponse pretty well. I plan on driving these beasts with a 60wpc tube amp I'm also building right now based on DIYTUBE's Poseidon kit. I'm changing a few things with it as well. SS rectification and it is stereo instead of the intended monoblock design.

I had even considered essentially doing a 4 way using a 12" open baffle and using the 15 for only 90 down or so. I'm not too sure yet. Just fishing for some opinions and suggestions.

Thanks,

Blair

OK, if using passive components, the relative efficiency of each of the drivers becomes more important.

I prefer the plate amp route, and when configured correctly, I even use an old analog EQ in the signal path to the subs, prior to the plate amp, to boost the lowest frequencies, and trim the highs even more aggressively.  Poor man's EQ solution.

At this point though, I will need to do a line level Xover for my tube amp, if I want to get that EQ back in the sub signal path, and relieve my tube amp of bass duties.

Do I recall that a cap in line with the signal can be used?  100Hz, 1st order Xover - 0.01 cap?

In the signal pat to roll of the signal highs, it should be a small inductor like a .01mh maybe? I have never passively EQ'd something in the signal path. Caps block lows. I have an old EQ laying around that needs deoxing. I'm still a bit uncertain of how much I really want to try to build a project this big. WAF if you know what I mean. I'm trying to talk myself into it. How do you guys manage efficiency down to say 30 hz typically? I see most of these drivers in an open baffle lose about 10-15db just from being open. Bass is really difficult to acheive open. From 150 up, it is a breeze.
