DVD with hard-drive as CD-transport?
« on: 25 Mar 2007, 05:35 pm »
Hi!  :D

I'm currently using a first generation DVD, a Sony DVP-S725D, as CD transport. It works and sounds very good, while I haven't made many comparisons at least it betters a Toshiba entry level DVD, a NEC external CD-ROM and a Philips CD620 (CDM4 transport) as transport.

One essential drawback however is that it doesn't read CD-Rs and I'm therefore considering getting a new transport. I've read lots of good stuff from people using PCs, Squeezebox transports and Olive Musicas as transports. Since I'd like to keep the number of machines down I'm thinking of getting a DVD with an internal hard-drive, and then transfer my CDs to the harddrive and use it as a transport to my NOS DAC.

Does anyone have any comments on this idea, and maybe even suggestions on what DVD machine would serve my purposes?

There are two drawbacks to this that come to mind. First, the hard drives on these machines might not have enough room for your whole collection and they aren't expandable. Second, they don't have the facilities to manage your music (tagging, etc.) that you get with the SB or Olive.

I would just buy a PC or MAC and use it as your DVD player. There's just so much more you can have going this route verses spending the money on a HD player or a DVD HD player.

Those Mac Minis aren't much larger than a DVD player.

A good move to put the question here  :) The two drawbacks you mention hmen are important, certainly the tag issue. And I'll have a look at the Mac Mini, GHM! Think I will think this transport thing over again!

Thanks!
