Best affordable HT Packages?
« on: 15 Jan 2007, 11:13 pm »
I've been thinking about downgrading my 2 channel system and converting to a more family friendly HT system.
I do have 3 requirements.  First is size. The system needs to be monitor based.  Second, I would like to stay below 1500.00.  Third, since I am still a music lover the system will have to have enough chops to satisfy me in the 2 channel music dept. when called upon.

Two early contenders I have read about are of the SVS SBS-01 systems http://www.svsound.com/products-sys-sbs_black.cfm
and one of the AVS 123 XLS- http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=speakers&product=92.1

The new speaker system will be paired with my existing JVC RX-F10 digital receiver and Pioneer DV- 79AVI DVD player.
Any comments on the above systems and recommendations on additional systems are appreciated.
Thanks.

I can highly recommend the "X" series of products from AV123.

Great company, great products, and great service.

Oh yeah, they sound and look way better than they should for the price.

I've read that the AV 123 series is excellent.  I have heard both the NHT - Classic Two Home Theater System and the RBH Sound CT-5.1.  The RBH system excels at HT.  The NHT is on sale right now.

Happy Hunting.

I'm gonna have to agree with George on this one. Go for an X Series setup from AV-123.

And as one who has seen waaaay too many movies in many, many different formats, setups & venues (Seriously, if there's any way you could've watched a movie in the last 50 or 60 years I've probably seen one in that manner) go for the X-CS's across the L/C/R channels if you can.

I know you said bookshelf size, so I don't know if that leaves you stuck with using the X-LS's. But if you can use the X-CS's across the front stage do it. Then use the X-LS's for rears if you need to (though X-CS's for rears would be great). Having a perfectly matched front stage goes a long way in a HT setup.

Bubba,
Thanks for the great info.  Do you think the 3 piece X-CS's have an edge over the X-LS's with music as well?

Looking at the specs for the two I like what I see on the X-CS better than the X-LS. The CS's are more efficient than the LS's. The CS's have a little smoother frequency response (though the LS still has a very nice looking frequency response). And the CS's are sealed while the LS's are ported.

My experience I've liked sealed speakers better than ported. I've not found ported speakers to be as clean/accurate as sealed speakers.

But seeing how Danny designed the X series and does a very good job with ported speakers I'm sure the LS's are better than most ported speakers.

I'd also imagine the extra driver in the CS would be an advantage over the LS, especially for music. I've not heard the X series speakers yet, but that's how my experience has been with other similar speakers where there's a monitor & a slightly larger monitor that has one more driver. Kinda like the old ELT LRS & ELT CSE, My M&K S-85's & S-125's and another model or two I can't recall at the moment.

You could also head over to the GR Research Circle here and ask Danny himself if the CS would be better than the LS for music. He'd know best since he designed 'em...

by the way, the X-cs sound wonderful, but you should be aware that they are much larger than the X-LS, and would be difficult to place on stands. If you have a bookshelf or wall unit, these are a great option for three or five of them around the room.
