I am looking for an inexpensive 6 ch converter.
« on: 19 Dec 2006, 08:15 pm »
hello, first post.

I have a computer that has the 5.1 fiber and coax outputs on it for playing dvd's.

What I am looking for is an inexpensive converter with 6 audio outs (L/R LR/RR/C/SW so I can use this with speakers in another room. My analog runs are not going to be long at all, just through the wall to a 6 channel amp and speakers.

The outputs I have now are on the back of the computer using cheesy 1/8 inch jacks. I want this converter to have RCA's.

the computer is set up to run its own analog conversion + the dig out stream. Just want to power up the other room.

Also, I have a DVD player with just 2 audio outputs. It also has the coax/fiber out. I could use it as well.

What I am trying to avoid is having to buy a 6 channel receiver. They are cheap enough I just don't want one.

And another thing:
I noticed that dvd players that have the 6 analog jacks are not much more expensive. This leads me to believe that i should be able to convert rather inexpensively.

Thanks for any answers.

Looking for 100 to 150 price point.

Last month I was looking for the same thing and found that this is the only game in town at that price point.  Creative DDTS100

Thank you Russ, have not seen that!!

I am surprised that this type of device is not getting any traction with the higher fidelity users. Without a receiver, how else you going to do it?

This looks like an area that has been painfully neglected in audio.

I've had mine for about a month.  The box is bigger than I expected but it functions as advertized and decodes DD and DTS just fine.  When I listen to it as a stereo DAC, it sounds pretty pedestrian.  But maybe with a few mods...

Note that because this is designed primarily for computer speaker use, the 5.1 outputs are minijacks not RCAs.  Not a big deal in my book.  Lots of minijack to RCA cables out there that will work.
