Fun at Home
« on: 28 Aug 2006, 05:51 pm »
One of my biggest regrets is that I rarely get to compare anything I've designed, since the cabinet and drivers go back to the owner when I'm finished.  I've only heard the HT3 a couple of times since it was introduced, and in those cases I hadn't focused on the bass response.  Recently, however, Jim sent me a damaged cabinet and the TC sounds woofer so I would have something to experiment with if we ever decide to change anything.  Today I took some annual leave to compare 10" woofers in an attempt to find a replacement for the Peerless unit used in my MB0W1 3-way.  It's been discontinued in some mindless corporate move by the parent company.  I've measured and listened to 3 or 4 possibilities in the under-$100 category, and thought a couple were doing pretty well.  Then, for fun, I hooked up the HT3 and did a tone sweep with it and the most promising 10" I've found to date.  Now the TC 10" costs twice as much, but we're not talking diminishing returns here. I thought I was getting some decent output at 32 Hz from a Peerless, but when I switched to the TC, the whole room started to shake.   And I could play it at almost twice the drive level before distortion started to take over. The TC held up to 28 Hz with no strain (but with some very worried looking dogs), at which point the other 10" had been reduced to flapping.  I make my living going after deceptive advertising, and I expect hype in any ad, but I must say the TC people really deliver on their claims.

Hi Dennis,

I still remember clearly how the tc sound when I heard it on your place that one weekend I was there for a listen. The varacity was clearly the best of the bunch according to my old ear. You were playing some low sine wave tone with your old trusty signal generator through them.

I am one that came all the way from Italy and had the oppportunity to see even the "Bob" speaker.

It was great to meet such a humble man.

More power.

ciao
Romeo

Hi    I enjoyed meeting that humble man as well.  Can't remember his name, though.  Anyhow, the HT3 you heard was the prototype, and its cabinet volume was really too small to do justice to the TC.  Jim enlarged it for the final version.  I have that Bob speaker back in my work room.  I'm trying it with the nextel version of the W18.

Hi Dennis,

The pleasure are all mine and hopefully I could hear some of your creations again.
Very interesting line up you got there. If only I can persuade my brother about DIY which basically live in your neighbourhood.

Cheers,
Romeo

Hey Dennis,

Since your working on a 3-way with the Peerless that can still be purchased at Parts Express, http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=297-636, I am assuming that the 3 or 4 possibilities are not as good as the Peerless, which is in the range of diminishing returns to the TC, correct?

Take care,

Tom

I just discovered that PE had the old Peerless a couple of days ago.  But in any event I wanted to find a permanent solution.  I did compare that Peerless with the HT3.  The old Peerless is a fine unit, and sounds very uncolored even with no crossover, but it was trampled by the TC.  No contest.  No diminishing returns.

Trampled, no contest, no diminishing returns.  Geez, I thought somebody mentioned that you were a gentleman.  Well since the Salk TC woofer is proprietary, I won't feel too bad about the Peerless woofer being trampled by the TC.  And since I am now wallowing in buyers remorse after purchasing a pair of Peerless woofers, I can state that the Peerless is a great value...right Dennis?

Thanks for the insight into woofer performance.  It is appreciated to those of us without the necessary measuring equipment.

Thanks for rubbing salt in the wounds Rom .  I know that a great loudspeaker is more than just great drivers; it is the culmination of drivers, crossover and cabinet that can create a synergistic combination.  I am sure that the Peerless woofers will suit my needs adequately and what I haven't heard won't hurt me :D.   Besides, I can always aspire to the TCs later if the upgraditis bug hits.

Hi   The Peerless really is a fine driver.  And it's much easier to work with than the TC, which is really a subwoofer and has to be wrestled to the ground to achieve a crossover even as low as 250 Hz.
