Any good, samll bookshelves for ~ $200-$500?
« on: 27 Jun 2006, 07:26 pm »
I'm looking for small bookshelve speakers for a kitchen system for around $200 - $500.  Used is OK.  They need to have good dispersion and good bass.  Something with a Scanspeak 8545 would be nice, but might not be possible in that price range.  I have some NHT SuperOne's right now that I am going to sell.  I want something with a bigger sound.  I don't want anything that may be considered to be bright.  Any suggestions?

Chuck listed some Paradigm Mini Monitors on June 22.

Not familiar w/ them but thought I'd point it out, in case.

That is one I've been looking at.  Rick also offered to make a custom 2-way with the SS8545.  It's out of my price range, but might be worth it.

What is your definition of "small"?  New or used?  Stock or modded?  Any finish requirements or WAF factors?

Based on mostly reading alone, and without verifying prices, here are a few of the smallest speakers that I can think of off the top of my head:

AV123 X-LS
Usher 520
RAD Micros or Metals
Swan M1
Gallo Acoustics Nucleus Micro, A'Diva or Due

Good luck!

You might consider several of the M&K speakers...B-1500 or B-1600

Small bookshelf kits are easy to build and finish and provide the best bang for the buck, in my opinion.  Have you considered DIY?
