VMPS 215 Subwoofer Question
« on: 20 Dec 2005, 09:02 pm »
I'm thinking about adding another 215 sub--for a total of 2. I have 1 of the Parts Express 1000 watt plate amps. Is there any way to use it to power both of the subs so I don't have to buy another one? Thanks.

I wouldn't recommend it as you'd have to bridge the two subs together in series.  Probably technically possible, but not advisable.

Why not?

IT all depends on the ohms. I thought the 215 was  8ohm load? If so he could parallel them together for an 4ohm load ,which the 1000 watt plate amp is made for anyways. I don't see the problem?

That's what I was thinking. Another sub and no amp. :D

Well, unless you are John Casler and have so many subs that you need to start stacking them (:o), you are probably going to want to locate the subs in different parts of the room.  This could be done simply to provide true stereo subs, or to ensure that the subs exercise different room modes for a more even overall response.

Either way, such a series-connected, dual-sub setup powered by a single amp would almost certainly require long runs of cable.  I would start to worry about things like the extra cable resistance, variable timing delays, and other such issues.  Even if these turn out not to be a problem, wiring such a setup will probably be inconvenient at the very least - even if 1000W is enough to power the combined subs.

Can you provide some more information on your setup and intended goals?  Desired placement, room size, etc.?

The speakers get wired in parallel, not series.

Cable resistance is a non-issue here, unless you are running 100's of feet of cheap wire. Something would have be very wrong with the wire, to make a change in the sub's behaviour, in a typical room.

1000W is a large amount of power for these subs. He has enough to run 2. More than enough.

The only trick is getting two subs positioned right, and I'm told the results are worth it.   Aim for the subs to be equidistant from the listener and symmetrical with respect to walls, and then start adjusting.

I'm going to use the subs as speaker stands for my 626r's. Cabling won't be an issue.

It should work as the amp is 1000W into 4 ohms and wired in parallel they will be four ohms.

How easy would it be to convert an OSW to a 215?
I need another stand for my left 626.

I thought the 215 was 8ohm load?

Is this the same load with the megawoofers?  I know the Larger is 4 ohm with and 8 ohm without.

KJ,
If the specs are correct on the sticky the Larger is 8ohm a woofer regardless if its the regular woof or megawoofers. I think paralled together gives an 4 ohm load. If I am wrong I am sure Brian will correct me. :nono: :D

The LARGER with the woofers "strapped or jumpered" (where the binding posts are connected with a short length of speaker wire) is a 4 ohm load.

Each of the woofers driven separately is 8 ohms.

The 215 (one 15" active) should also be 8 ohms.
