Building Speaker Stands

I'm thinking about building speaker stands.
- I'm going to construct an open top wooden box, then give it a nice finish.

- Then I'm going to fill it w/ some of those grey bricks. (roughly 1.5" x 6" x 12" - or a close equivelant)

- The bricks will be glued together. Then I will glue a felt cover over the opening.

- The box of bricks will stand about 10" tall. Height of the box sides and bricks will be even.

- Finally a 31"h x 14"w x 11"d speaker w/ speaker spikes will sit on top of this box - spikes will anchor to the bricks.

My question, is this a bad idea, good idea, or doesn't matter???

Should I use the coasters or not???

Thanks in advance :-)

One thing I forgot to mention was...

The goal was not to put speaker spike holes in the carpet.  I'm new to this  Mid-Fi Audio stuff, so I'm not even sure if spike holes in the carpet is anything to worry about.

Thanks again  :)

Hi dcruz,

I suggest spike holes in the carpet are nothing to worry about ... unless it's an antique Persian!  :D

The "spikes" under my speakers are 1/4" bolts, filed to a point; they do leave a small hole in the plush but after a bit of walking on this (when I've moved the speakers), you can't see the hole any more.

However, your idea of a box (more usually filled with sand than blocks) might have some merit. Spikes hold the speaker steady but they do couple it to the floor and if this is a suspended wooden floor, you might have some problems.  People espouse the "sand box" idea to decouple the speakers from the floor - go look at Audio Asylum.

Regards,

Andy
