Hi,
Another topic related to the IC plug.  Right now,  I see there are two different type of plugs i have in mind:
 Eichmann Bullet Plugs : http://venhaus1.com/bullet-plug.gif
 Cardas GMSO: http://www.diycable.com/main/product_info.php?cPath=26_44_47_58&products_id=214&Cid=1141f743fd7cca59c02c62c19c5c95c1

Which one do you prefer? For Eichmann Bullet Plugs, does it reduce sound quality in the long run due to the plasic construction?

Does it reduce sound quality in the long run????? No, the low mass increases sound quality.  Some people have a problem with the durability of them in the long run, but I never have.

A partial answer to your question might be it depends on the cable you are going to be using, for example if you are going to be using Co-ax cable to make your IC's, it might not matter that much.  If you are going to be using some high quality long grain silver with cotton wrap wire, then I would prefer the Eichman given the two choices.

Also depending on your system, you might prefer either the silver or the copper Eichmans.

In experiments with WBT Nextgen connectors using identical IC's, I could not tell the difference between copper Nextgens treated with Silclear, and the silver Nextgens.  Because of those experiments I will only be buying the copper plugs, and if needed treat them.

Hi,

I have been using the Bullet copper version with my homemade IC for a few months. I have not compare them to the Cardas but I'm very happy with them :D

True that the plastic body is more delicate than the metal body. Just be a bit more careful when working with them. And make sure you put them in an unuse female socket when soldering the wire to it!

For normal use they will be just fine like the metal body one. You are not planning to unplug and plug them everyday right?

Take care,

I've not had any problem with the Eichmann's. And if you're DIY'ing cables with the Eichmann's just be sure to follow the soldering instructions that comes with them & you'll be fine.

I really like the performance of the Bullet plugs. And I've never had any problems with them breaking or wearing out over the few years that I've been using them. I've only really ever used the silver Bullets. But I've been using them since they were introduced.

I am also very pleased with the WBT NextGen's. I've been using these as well since they were introduced (before they were actually under production). But I don't like the fact that the NextGen's are locking plugs. Most of my connections are tight, and it makes locking the NextGen's a bit of a pain in the ass.

I'd choose either the Bullet Plug or the NextGen any day over the Cardas RCA's.

Hi,

Well, don't worry. It's not hard at all. Take some practice. Here is a useful link that might help you get start soldering.

http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/solder.htm

As for the soldering iron. For a start with small project like IC the cheap Radio Shack will do just fine. But if you planing to make other stuff in the future than I do recommend the Weller WLC100. I have been using this model for about 5 years now. You might want to get this because once you starting buiding stuffs than there is stopping.

For solder. I'm currently using Woder Ultraclear of which I like. Also, there are WBT, and Cardas solder that are also good.

 For parts

Welborne Lab. This is where I got my amp   Don't forget to check out thier excellent 300B amp.
 http://welbornelabs.com

Percy Audio. Excellent hi-end parts and wires slection. you have to download the catalog.
http://percyaudio

And Antique Electornic Supply for other misc stuff. Including the soldering station.

Well, this should get you start up.
