How to battery power a DAC1?
« on: 23 Jul 2005, 07:44 pm »
Hi all,

I'm using a Benchmark DAC1 in my stereo rig, and instead of investing in power conditioning/cords, I wondering if its possible to use batteries to power DAC1. Since its a source component, it will take much less power than a receiver/amplifier.  Are there anything audiophile-grade that can be used like this? I'm looking to spend well under $500.

Thank you.

The DAC-1 has a built in AC transformer, which would be something you'd want to bypass, unless you feel like using a DC->AC->DC path, which would probably be inefficient.
Also, the DAC-1 runs pretty warm in idle mode, in fact it seems just as warm as when powering headphones. I wonder if it runs biased in Class A.
Remember, it's not just a DAC, its got an amp section. It won't be as efficient as the DACs that are designed to run on battery power.

Whatever you do, make sure it's reversible.  Many seem to prefer that liquid, self-effacing character of battery power, but it depends on your tastes.  So far, with equipment I've tried powering with SLA battery+caps, I prefer AC power from a good power conditioner for more spice, apparent detail, and Razztazz..
