Hi Tony, DAC stands for "digital to analog convertor." It converts the digital signal from your CD transport (typically) into the analog signal that your preamplifier operates on.
All CD players have a DAC built into them, but may people find that the results are better if they use a separate DAC. There is a connector on the back of the CD player that outputs the digital signal.
