Just got my JVC RX-F10S (Amazon @ US$189) and would like to thank Chairguy and all the others who have provided such invaluable input/suggestions! Gracias!

Before I start, please read at least some of this if only to appreciate where you live and what is readily available to you (if you've got the necessary $$$ to satisfy some or all of your "habit").

For those who are on a very restricted setup budget and are wondering whether to take the plunge into digital, there is a very marked diference compared to the Marantz SR585 A/V amp I was using. My wife and kids noticed "much more detail" on movies and especially on music.... right out of the box and in spite of the fact that Mexican Customs officials destroyed the foam packaging. The amp was sitting on the bottom of the cardboard box for the rest of its shipping. (Does that make it physically robust too?) We are enjoying music again! Home theater is also more of a hoot.

Facts/complaints before the Question:

a) I'm in provincial Mexico and can't throw away over US$1,000 on a flawed "equipment-buying experiment".

b) Getting stuff shipped over the border can be a nightmare/excessively & arbitrarily expensive (if you in fact finally receive the merchandise).

b) Prices are 30%-50% (or more) above US levels for even lower- mid-range equipment.

c) You have to be in a major city to listen to equipment before buying.

QUESTION: Would "tried and true/reputable" like B&W SM602 S3's,B&W ASW 600 sub work with this amp (they're available here)? The claimed impedances don't seem to ask more of the amp than it can give.

Because of where I live, I will always be buying "blind".

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Fitz[/b]

Hola Fitz...y de nada.

The F10 is a wonderfully little machine.  But, tho rated at 100 watts, I gather it more to be a very good 40 or 50 watter.

There is nothing more difficult to produce than clean bass - it requires tons of amperage and or wattage for high output bass reproduction.   The JVC seems to have likely neither.

I don't know the models you speak of, but are they passive subs?  Seems to me there are many more powered subs on the market nowadays to buy in US (or Mexico, I presume).  It think you'd be better off buying a self-powered sub and spare the JVC to do the wonderful midrange and treble duties (two tasks  it does exceedingly well for the modest price).

I've said it a lot so folks can almost guess whet I'm about to write, BUT....get some power conditioning on that JVC. It need not be terribly pricey, but get something - you will olove the JVC all the more.  I've heard great things about the Enacom Line Cleaner - it sells for $85 here in US in a many places.

'Ta luego.

Hey, ChairGuy!

worry not -- the sub is  not a passive one (ASW is claimed to stand for Active Sub Woofer).  i.e. The sub is powered and the other shelf speakers probably reach lower beyond (based on user claims) what I believe my current sub really produces (inaccurate distortion not much below 60Hz at best).

Somne day my home will be larger and I won't have to worry about waking the ankle-biters post-9:30pm to be sure!

Will a line conditioner help on a wildly variable, poorly maintained supply (lots of brown-outs)? If so, I'm in.

'ta pronto.
