The Quad 99CDP CD player sells for about $850-950 used. It is very, very good! Not only is it a good CD player, but it has an excellent variable volume control so you can run it direct to a power amp if you want. It also has 6 digital inputs so you can connect other digital sources to it and use its built-in 24bit/192khz DAC to improve the sound of a component like a DVD player.

I've owned several CD players that listed for $2500-3500 and now that I own the Quad ($1500 msrp), I don't miss them at all!

Enjoy,

TIC

if you CD Player has a digital out, why not add a DAC? The Benchmark DAC-1 seems to be generating some waves

A Marantz SA8260 is excellent on both redbook and SACD.  The improvement over my Sony 555es cd player amazed me as I figured only subtle differences.  Midrange is rich and lush and the treble so smooth and articulate while the Sony was bright and hard and vocals just didn't have the body I thought they should have.  At bare minimum worth trying. I've noticed hardly any for sale on Audiogon.

Agreed.  I just bought one used a few weeks ago, and I like it very much. I prefer it over the Benchmark DAC1 I owned before the 8260.

Note: be careful if you're going to buy an 8260 on the used market because there was a firmware bug on some of the older models that resulted in the machine failing to play some SACDs.
