LGK 2.1 vs Beonicke W5
« on: 3 Jan 2023, 04:18 am »
I am very interested in LGK 2.1 kit and I came across the Beonicke W5 which looks very similar to the LGK 2.1.  Besides the $6,000 MSRP, the Beonicke has a small rear facing tweeter to enhance sound stage.  My question to Danny is, what do you think of this design and would an open baffle version of the LGK 2.1 work better?

Thanks,

Trey

I am not a fan of metal cone drivers for a wide band signal, but they look really nice.

We have a LGK 2.4 model that we are finishing up on that has an LGK driver on the front and rear, plus four 5" woofers below handling the lower ranges. It is not a rear firing tweeter but it acts much like one. The second LGK plays down a little lower than a tweeter, but not low enough to cause cancellation of the front driver.

That is exciting to hear about the LGK 2.4.

What is the expected Freq Range for the speakers?

I am going to guess -3db ranges down low to be in the low to mid 50's as they are using sealed woofers. The rest of the frequency range is dead flat and then there is a slight peak way up at 14kHz.

I managed to find some measurements of the Boenicke W5 online from a couple sources, and they definitely have some issues, especially above 4KHz where it rises 10dB before getting into breakup territory starting around 7500Hz, likely involving a lot of ringing at each peak

The Boenicke will have better bass extension (down to about 55Hz) than the LGK 2.1, but the 2.1 will have a much more balanced overall tone with bass extension down to 70Hz, just a bit less interesting looking of a design.

I've seen these a couple times at shows. Excellent soundstage and imaging but looking at that graph I see why they never toe them in.

Thank you for responding Danny, I am VERY excited to hear more about the LGK 2.4's! (I am also equally curious about what 2.2 and 2.3 is about)

Danny just filmed the video for the 2.2 today, so it should go live in the next week.

Here's one of the pictures used for the website:

The one in the video is painted with duratex to match the 2.1s we built a couple months ago.

It's intended to be the matching center channel to the 2.1 with a woofer on either side of the LGK driver.
It can also be used in pairs as L/R speakers as well.

We don't have a 2.3 planned.

The 2.4 will be the a tower version with 4 woofers below and a single rear-firing LGK.

The initial prototype was essentially a 2.1 but with 4 woofers down below.
We'll be tweaking the cabinet design for the 2.4 to fit the rear driver and get a new test cabinet built as well
