X-SLS - First GR build
« on: 30 Nov 2020, 12:58 pm »
Well, that was fun!

Our X-SLS project is complete and my wife and I are very pleased with the results. The only modification made was to make the sandbag area in the bottom of the enclosure a couple inches taller in order to get the drivers level with our listening position.  A servo sub is next up.

PS What’s the trick to get images rotated correctly? I tried rotating the images before uploading. Mystery

What I found to work is to save the image in a reduced size, either 50%-80% of full size or to save the full size image for the web, which reduces the file size. Depending on your photo editing software, you may not have an option to "Save for the Web". If that's the case, just save as a JPEG at Medium size (50-80%). Then upload the smaller file. The smaller size file appears right side up in the post. There are probably other ways that will work, I just don't know what they are.

I’ll give that a try,

Thanks!

Hi Loudspeakerboy. I, and I imagine others, would be curious on some construction details. Sides look like they might be clear over MDF? Paint? Solid wood baffle?

And I think I see a CNC router as I virtually snoop around your shop. Sorry, I can't help it...

They look great. Nice work.

Peter,

Yes, the MDF along with everything else is finished bright using Daly’s Profin. The Profin is easy to use and produces a very durable, amber-tinted finish. I’ve been using this finish on wood kitchen countertops for years. The MDF joints must be tight to pull this off. It ends up looking a lot like fine grain leather. (Be aware that the used wiping rags can spontaneously combust). The front baffles are bookmatched figured sapele. They are an 1-1/8” thick. Because the front baffles are 3/8” thicker than spec I put a 5/8” round-over on the woofer opening and 3/8” on the tweeter. The tweeter round-over probably wasn’t necessary but I was there, and yes, that is a cnc router in the background.

Cheers, Michael

In your third picture it looks as though you have cut biscuit joints in the sapele?  Am I seeing that right?  Just wondering about your construction methods.  I did a similar version of the X-SLS's where I clad the whole MDF box in quilted maple.  If you are interested... https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=171848.0   Great build!  Love the SLS's.

Nice looking cabinets Russell,

Yes I used biscuits to help index the front baffle during final glue-up. Biscuits are pretty much worthless for anything other than basic part indexing.
