DBpoweramp conversion from ALAC or AIFF to FLAC?
« on: 12 Sep 2020, 07:52 pm »
Doesn't this seem pointless?  Am I putting lipstick on a pig?

I feel like converting AAC to FLAC in particular would be like making lemonade with rotten lemons.

Amiright? :)

Thanks in advance.

AAC to FLAC makes no sense. Lossy -> lossless makes no sense. You're simply increasing size with no benefit and only negatives.

ALAC -> FLAC...maybe a benefit if one of your system has issues with ALAC. FLAC is more universal.

AIFF -> FLAC...you can get smaller sizes and save space while having identical copy of the music. That's a positive.

I keep music in both FLAC (highest compression) and WAV. Both have a purpose.

Agreed AAC>FLAC is pointless- once data is removed, it doesn't come back (although aac 320 sounds pretty good)

Most of what I transfer to my digital setup is WAV. The only FLAC are downloads from HDtracks, etc. Makes download time far faster.

All the ALAC and AIFF conversion to FLAC is going fine.  It sure is a lot of manual work though.  I'm using DBpoweramp converter.  Anyone else out there doing this?

Dbpoweramp had a BATCH converter component.  I bought the complete package years ago and do not recall the various components or packages.

It is a 1 step operation when you set the options you desire.  It will do 1 song or 1 hard drive with dsp options.

+1 for the batch converter.  It works great.
The link to it is in the Program Menus.

I spent about an hour last night trying to get this to work but couldn't.  The files are on a NAS, and I cannot get DBPoweramp to find that NAS.  So, the work-around was to dump the whole music folder onto the computer hard drive (which I left to do overnight) and I'm going to re-try the batch converter tonight.
