Is my room big enough for NX-Oticas?
« on: 5 Apr 2020, 04:06 pm »
The wife and I recently moved and in the process I picked up space to finally setup a listening room. However, I was wondering what opinions are out there on the side of the room vs. the size of the NX-Oticas. Below is a screenshot of the floorplan. My first thought was the put the speakers on the long wall, since otherwise it would be asymmetric, but then I don't know if there's enough distance between them and me, if they are pulled out into the room properly. Otherwise, how much of an issue is the asymmetric layout?

Thanks

A bit more info would be helpful. Is this a dedicated listening space or a shared living space? If it is a dedicated listening room I would try two layouts.

1. place the speakers with their backs to the foyer facing into the room and place the the seating position along the long wall but out from the wall 3-5 feet. This will give the needed space behind the speakers and you for minimum room interaction. Start with the speakers 6-8 feet apart and the seating position around the same distance from the plane of the speakers.
Of course experimentation is in order.

2. try the reverse with the listening seat near the opening to the foyer. This may work better in terms of running speaker wires to equipment.

If it is a shared space then you will be more limited.

Also if the foyer is all hard surfaces it my be very reverberant. In that case some heavy drapes across the opening will help quiet things down.

Thanks for the response. It is a dedicated space so there are no restrictions on the layout. I don't have the NX-Oticas yet to attempt different layouts. Based on the results from this thread I was going to decide between them and the Studio Monitors.

If you can afford it go with the NX-Otica's, they will will have more dynamics and higher SPL due to the extra drivers plus should blend with subs even better because they go lower in the bass.

You could also set the speakers up on the short wall. With the NX-Oticas and separate sub towers, the subs would be almost against the side walls but with open baffle you can get away with that.

Each orientation has it's pluses and minuses. Since it's a dedicated room you can try each configuration and see which you like best.

For overall sound quality and enjoyment you will prefer the NX-Oticas & OB subs to the studio monitors. That is provided you like the open baffle sound.

Your room is definitely big enough for the NX-Oticas.

I have the same layout but with a little more wiggle room (14x18), and went with the NX-Oticas and triple OBs.  The build is still in process, so I don’t have much to report.  The speakers will be on the short wall.

My understand is that interaction with the sides is much less of a problem with OB’s, and you want as much space back and front as you can get.  Even with my current box speakers, having one side of the listening area open doesn’t really cause any problems.
