Bryston bp4
« on: 2 Nov 2019, 02:46 am »
Hello, l hope someone here can advise me on my preamp, or point me in the right direction.
I recently pulled it from storage and replaced a beat up rotel unit. I immediately noticed the bp4 was much improved  in the bass and midrange but was slightly lacking in high end detail and ‘airiness’. As far as I know the bp4 may be in need of restoration, or could the two just be sonically different? If the bp4 needs a refresh, is it as easy as changing some caps myself or does it need to go to Bryston? Also, if I were to recap where can I get recommendations for brands and values.
Thank you in advance for any help.

Hello again, obviously I came to the wrong forum. Could someone please tell me where to go for help?
I took my bp4 out of the system and used the variable outputs of my cd player direct to amp. I find that the bp4 definitely has a veil over the highs. After inspecting and cleaning switches, I found no bulging caps. I cannot find how to get deoxit into the volume pot.
At this point, I am considering replacing with a rotel or parasound pre as the Bryston is definitely veiling the upper frequencies. I have been a fan of Bryston for many years and have other Bryston gear but this latest comparison with Rotel surprised me to say the least. I'm saddened that a cheaper overseas built product outperforms the Bryston. That is why I turned to this site. My apologies to all for wasting your time.

Hi - sorry just noticed this.

Can you send your comments to Mike at Bryston please in service.  The BP4 is an extremely old unit so may need some work.

Thank you James. My last experience with Bryston service was absolutely exceptional. I have a feeling it may not be worth restoring,  will  soon find out. Thank you again.
