Just for clarification, are all of the RM30 cabinets finished by Bud Bailey of VIP Wood?

Assuming they are, John's recent post on light finishes applies to non-domestic / MLS cabinets only correct?

Thanks.

Yes, I believe so.

I've often wondered why Brian just doesn't officially make the switch and begin ordering all cabinets from MLS.  I have the 626Rs and LRC in the MLS finish and they are amazing.

Lead times from China are very long, and I have to fill a 20ft container minimum.  Plus I have a good stock of RM30 in the Bud Bailey finishes which are very nice: lite and dk oak, piano black, cherry and rosewood.

I've seen pictures of the light oak and piano black RM30s, and they looked good.

Any chance of some RM30 pictures in the dark oak, cherry and rosewood finishes?

Is there any chance of seeing a picture of the RM30s in cherry?

Getting a new digital camera for Xmas (first got stolen); I'll bite the bullet and learn how to post them.

Wayne,

How "red" does the rosewood appear in person (IYO)?  Photo looks great!

Off topic a bit but in light of something Brian posted recently over in one of those anti-vmps threads, I just want to say how much I've appreciated Brian's straight answers over the years. Whether it's about QC problems with a driver mounting he's publicly offering to make right, or sharing his knowledge and experience responding to Spica questions, or detailing some of the tricks in choosing the correct crossover point up around 10k so as to avoid dulling the sound, or giving the straight skinny on his experiences with vendors such as B&G, or cutting through fraternal, industry BS/euphemisms, I've learned you can really trust what he says. It's nice to have such industry people as Brian participating.

That direct answer about cabinet sourcing is just the latest example. (BTW, those R'wood 30's look pretty nice, which is not something I always think of vmps products or the web site.)

And Brian's sonic track record and simultaneous commitment to value seem pretty well established to me.

BTW, I'm non-partisan, generally preferring as I do speakers which tend towards the smooth and probably less resolving. I am unlikely to spring for that level of ancillaries anytime soon....

The Rosewood RM-30s are very red. They are the best looking cabinets I have seen from VMPS. I have yet to get a good close view of the MLS cabinets yet.

Turk should be getting his African Ebony RM-40s back from Brian soon. I will better be able to make comparisons after that.

IMHO the $800.00 upcharge for the Rosewood is worth every penny.

Having seen the Rosewood pair up close I agree with Wayne that it is very high quality.

I have a pair of RM 40's in the MLS African Ebony and they are excellent as well.

The cabinet work is absolutely a non-issue when it comes to VMPS speakers now.

I may be supposing a bit too much here, but in this thread at least, I don't think people were worried about the quality of the cabinets, but are instead trying to get a handle on the true color and wood grain texture of the available finishes.  Reviews the cabinet work from both Bud and MLS have been great, but finding some of these speakers in the wild to audition and examine is difficult.

Photos viewed via computer are notorious for inaccurate color rendering.  Your audition of a piano black pair of speakers may sell you on that model, but if you don't like piano black finishes, it is a rather large leap of faith to choose another finish based only on internet pictures - the leap being proportional to the price tag of the speakers.

Exactly.

I'm not concerned with the quality of the woodwork because I already believe it to be excellent.  I am, however, concerned that the rosewood might appear different in person compared to the single photo we have all seen (don't get me wrong, I'm very appreciative that we have a photo).  From the appearance of the picture that Wayne took, the rosewood appears brown with red hues.  If it truly appears "very red," then I might have to reconsider given the woodwork in my current surroundings.

KJ,

You might want to get in touch with Brian directly about this issue.

The color and one's perception of it will vary under different lighting conditons and backgrounds.

The Rosewood speakers were more red than the Paduak Teak of the JJAZ amplifiers, Monkeywood base of my Teres turntable and Bubinga side panels of my preamps.

As to how they will match with your current woodwork, that is an unknown.

I guess you will have to go to California to see the speakers for yourself or order a pair and see how they match up in your listening space :D

Since the photos you reference look brown to me (perhaps I'm going color blind), I'll agree with you there.  Given that you've seen the real deal, does your photo look less red to you than the RM30s do in person?

This is what I'm thinking of when I hear wood described as red:

Thanks for providing a reference!

To me, those B&W speakers look more purple

I feel the digital photo gives a very accurate representation of the color of the speakers in my room with a flash lighting them.

If you wish to call them brown with red highlights, cool. To me they are more red than brown :D
