Help Selling Collection
« on: 14 May 2015, 11:57 am »
Well, sold my table and decided to join the cloud generation.  Now I have my vinyl collection that goes back to the late 60's (including some really old "stuff" found in my parent's attic) to catalog, appraise and eventually sell.  Can anyone point me to some websites or other sources that will help me to place a value on my records??  Many thanks!!   :thumb:

I would start with discogs.com. They have a very comprehensive list and you can pretty much find every version of album pressings.

Discogs is good. Will show what they have sold for the lowest price, highest, and median.

Also you can look at popsike.com.  It catalogs what records have sold for on eBay.

Another recommendation for Discdogs for valuation, but I think you'll be a bit disappointed as it takes a lot of time for the right buyer to discover you have just the record he's looking for.  The alternative of selling to a used record shop is an alternative, but my shop will only take the best stuff and then they pay about 25% of what they sell for, so it's hardly worth the hassle.

I'd suggest culling out the most collectible/valuable and selling them on EBay or here, and find a young/poor audiophile to give the rest to, or donate them.  Of course you could tell us what you've got and we can make offers  :D

I agree with ACHiPo. I once picked up a ton of vinyl cheap and thought I'd resell it for a profit. The short version is I ended up practically giving away the stuff I didn't want because I found most people that would have been interested in what I had, were either dead or close to it.  :( I did get a lot of good stuff out of the purchase, but most records aren't as valuable as you think.

Agree with the above.  You will quickly find out most records are not worth much, unless you have limited pressings that are highly collectible.

popsike is a great site.

There is a lot of useful info to be had from that site.

SteveRB, I don't have anything written down yet.  Hundreds of albums (mostly from around 1970 through maybe 1985, a number of 78's going back to the 1920's I guess, and a number of albums from the 40's - big band stuff mostly, and a box full of 45's.  For example, two of the first two records I purchased while in my teens were Zeppelin II and Best of Cream. A fair bit of jazz (fusion and otherwise) from the late 70's and early 80's, The Living Chicago Blues series for example.

oh c'mon. Just checking. If this was in my backyard, I'd love to go have a look. Pretty sure most of us would.

A real vulture would have PM'ed the guy to weasel his way in -- I'm asking in the wide open.

Hey fellas.  It's all okay.  No offense taken.  Won't sell until I have some idea as to what things are worth anyway.  Doesn't appear that it will be all that much.  Southern Wisconsin . . . great brewery 2 miles away :)

That's too often how it ends up.

Discogs is great, but it can be a hassle. It will take a long time to sell LPs individually. Also, there is always the chance that a buyer, ends up returning LPs that they feel aren't as good as your rating... happens. Best case scenario if you are looking to get them all out the door, is to find a collector who or store that agrees to a bulk price. Try contacting both big city dealers and small market shops. Perhaps you could pull a few of the more valuable ones to sell online and get a little extra cash back out of the investment. Good luck!

Thanks.  I think I'm going to try to get them all on a data base of some sort and then look for a buyer to take the whoe lot.  Unless maybe there's a collector only interested in the 78's.  Another hobby . . . as if I need one :)
