Why not flush mount the drivers?
« on: 29 Sep 2004, 12:29 am »
Brian,

I know that the 40's produce excellent sound without flush mounting the drivers, I was just curious about why you don't flush mount them?

If I tried to flush mount the drivers, would that be impacting the sound (in either a positive or negative fashion)?

Thanks,

George

I think it's one of those damn if you do, damn if you don't.  I think Marbles is on the right track, use some 1/8-3/16" weatherstripping foam/rubber from HD/Lowes to raise the neo's a bit to make it more flush.

You would absolutely be able to see the effects of not flush mounting the drivers if you took a MLS measurement of your speakers.  Whether or not you'd hear its effects is another story.  FWIW, these types of diffraction effects cannot be engineered out through the crossover.

FWIW, my RM30 has perfectly flush mounted midranges, my 626R's are slightly recessed, like my RM40's were.

Either a rectantular trim ring over the panels, or an MDF gasket under the panels will solve the problem.

3/16" offset is not a sonic factor, given the range of movement of people's heads while listening.
