Single vs. Dual subs?
« on: 22 Apr 2015, 05:45 pm »
I use two GR Research 12" servo drivers in a single H-frame cabinet for my 2-channel system that sits in between a pair of MTM OB monitors. I'm considering the purchase of an identical servo sub, then use them as speaker stands.  However, I'm reluctant to spend the money if the improvement is only modest. Has anyone "upgraded" their GR Research servo subs from one to two of them? If so, what was the difference? Thanks.

I think it's worth it because it will allow you to run the subs higher in stereo mode.  The punch and snap of the subs in the upper bass region is pretty impressive, and probably far better than the bass capabilities of the MTM OB monitors.

Yup, I did exactly that.  Had  1 tower up and running for a couple/few months before  adding the 2nd.   I added teh 2nd on page 5 of my build thread

I have some impressins on the thread...but in a nutshell,  even though I found the single H frame  prduced pretty good bass throughout the room, it was definitly stronger on the one side.  Adding the 2nd   really   was worth it.   Much more even distribuiton and as i mentioned in the trhead,  i thought it improved the soundstage.  Even though I'm crossing at approx 80hz and therefore should be omni directional,  I still found going to stereo subs produced much more "movement" of  low frequencies, a big diference in percussion   You're also working each pair less to produce the same SPL so  it's even cleaner

Yeah, it's a chunk of change but these subs will ast  you a long as yo uneed them to,  I thought the difference was signifcant and would recommend it.
I love  them as a pair

Yes, one thing people don't realized is that 80hz is the point where bass becomes omni-directional from an audible standpoint, but they are still VERY MUCH directional from a "pressure on the skin" standpoint.  So dual subs located close to your speakers is always going to be an improvement over a single sub elsewhere (or even multiple subs elsewhere).

This was helpful. Now I know what I need to do -- save my pennies. Thanks.

Like Jay I have a pair of dual subs.  My impressions of single cabinet vs two cabinets is the same as his.

One is nice but two brings the magic!  :thumb: :thumb:
