My finished room: Confidence Mansion
« on: 5 Oct 2014, 06:26 pm »
It took me almost 4 years to finalize this dedicated room, but I can only confirm that good room acoustics is a real must have for each audio enthusiastic.
A friend of my made some pictures yesterday to finally create some panorama's of this room.

When I started this project I wanted to create a 7.1 system based on Dynaudio Confidence speakers (explaining the name of this project), but after finalizing this room I ran into a pair of Von Schweikert VR10-MKII's. The temptation was too high... :D (see the result below) If people want more information, please let me know.

Best regards, Jean (the Netherlands)

Wow, that is impressive!  Is the room only diffusion or do you have absorption too?  Both of those speakers are supposed to be very nice.

Jean,

Beautiful room!  :thumb:

Please give details on the diffusor construction.  :D

Very nice.  I had just mentioned that there is always better under my thread, and here is a fine example :).

Thank you all for the compliments! The room has both absorption and diffusion. Most of the absorption is realized by 7 big basstraps each having a specific frequency tuning in the range up to about 120 Hz (they form a cascade to cover the lower frequency region). These basstraps are located at the front wall and back wall of the room. After finalizing the basstraps an actual RT60 measurement was performed to further specify the damping requirements for the ceiling. I tried to fully symmetrically design the room. Diffusion is applied on all the sidewalls and on the ceiling. On the side walls near the front speakers, commercial RPG diffractals are used, the rest of the diffusers are built by myself. This room is built as a room in a room, it only shares the foundation with the outside of the rest of the building. Also the floor is dynamically isolated from the rest of the building. Thank you Housteau, but I'm 100% sure that the same holds for this one.

Thanks again for the nice feedback!

The goal was indeed to create on 'acoustic optimal' living room/home theater in our backyard.
If compromises needed to be made between stereo versus home-cinema, the latter always 'lost'.

For those who are interested in some background... I started a topic last summer in the 'Von Schweikert circle' (just after getting my VR10-MK2's).

Love love love those Dyn Confidence big speakers.

I will never forget hearing them at a local audio store driven by Cary monoblocks and a Cary cd player a number of years ago.

Great room, thanks for sharing.

That is a very good write-up on your project.  It was very well thought out from the start.  It looks like you pretty much were armed with all the right knowledge before you started and as you continued with it.  Unfortunately when I built my original space (around 1992 I think) I did not know nearly what I know today and I followed some advice that I should not have.  If I could go back I would have done it differently.  But, I was fortunate enough to be given the chance to improve upon that original design earlier this year.

That is highly impressive!
What size screen, and what projector are you using?

Thanks again! The Dynaudio Confidence C4’s are indeed great speakers, but as always… there is always an superlative degree and this (possibly) also holds for these Von Schweikerts. @Housteau: For the planning it helped that I'm already more than 25 years ‘audiophile’ so heard a lot, tried a lot and I have a technical background in the field acoustics, mechanical engineering and mechatronics. Furthermore I'm very patient (until I really know what I want) :). I was lucky that I was able to visit a few top rooms in the Netherlands, having a few other specialist around while having a whole list of questions to figure out what I wanted and what not, before starting this project. Only the preparations on paper took more than 9 months before starting with the physical work. I use a JVC dla-rs55 ISF-calibrated projector in combination with a 123” Stewart Luxus Electriscreen LX123HST13 (gain 1.3).

Best regards,

Jan
