It is a metric thread. I don't know what size exactly. I have installed hundreds of them and never needed to know. Thread diameter is .31".

If that is the OD of the spike it is more than likely an 8mm.

Yeah, OD of the threads.

Many years ago I went down to the hardware store with one of the spikes and picked up a few metric bolts that matched the thread. I still use one of those bolts for installing the inserts. I have never really paid much attention to what size they were and it's been many years.

If they are the same as the ones Danny sells on his site, they are M8. I just bought a set.

I think M8's have 1.25 pitch, and M6's 1.00

The thread i needed was 8mm. Danny's spikes fit perfectly. 8mm thread is not common for spikes. I was pleasantly surprised Danny had these in stock. You can easily spend a ridiculous amount on spikes at this measurement. I'm very happy with this purchase.

Deviating from the subject slightly...

I have built 40lb stands for my X-LS's. What is the best combination? (A1 & B2?):

A) Speaker enclosure and stand interface = 1.Spikes / 2.Rubber feet / 3.Cork / 4.Felt / 5.Something else

B) 40lb stand and wooden floor interface = 1.Spikes / 2.Rubber feet / 3.Cork / 4.Felt / 5.Something else

For both interfaces?
(Love that low tech idea BTW)

I go with A2 because I am always swapping out various speakers on the stands and the rubber dots do not harm the bottom of the speakers. A spike would be better though technically.

I go with B1 to focus the weight down to small points. This helps couple the speaker to the floor. I also use brass disks under the spikes to protect the floor.

Thats exactly the info I was looking for. Have you experimented with different rubber dots? Any recommendations?

I haven't played with them enough to say one is better than another.
