Snagged a pristine Marantz 2235...
« on: 8 Dec 2013, 05:06 pm »
Just needed to share this. Snagged a mint Marantz 2235 and it appears to be the cleanest, inside and out, I could find. I once had a 2230 in wooden case, but sold it to a co-worker who needed a phono section/amp for his TT and album collection. Missed it so much, need to get another Vintage Marantz receiver. Any other Marantz lovers out there...

Will post pics in a week... (I'm like a kid)

My first serious amp was a 22 series Marantz (think it was a 65).  Long gone but fondly remembered.  There seem to be quite a few quality 70's Marantz, Sansui, and Pioneer amps out there for sale - been thinking about purchasing one.  Guess I am also nervous about buying something that may look good outside but needs caps replaced (I read most of these caps have about 15-20 year lifespan) or have other ailments and me having no technical skills.  Proofing yourself against this means buying one that has been reconditioned which gets quite a bit more expensive and harder to find.  So for now I sit on the fence waffling a little every time a post like this comes up.

I'll let you know how this turns out. The seller replaced the lamps, rebiased, and check caps. The pics inside and out are very, very clean. So I guess it got a good tune up. I had luck with one other, will see about this one

My older brother who got me started on my audio craze used to own a 2235B in the mid-late 70's.

Wow, that was a long time ago wasn't it?

The years do appear to have sped up, now that you mention it.

I found a very very close to mint 2235B in a dumpster once several years ago. I wasn't on a dumpster diving mission or anything. You guys know what I mean. I just saw it laying there at the top of a heap of garbage (mainly building materials and broken household items) in one of those giant industrial dumpsters at the apartment complex I was living in at the time. It was maybe a week or so after college was out for the summer, so I'm betting it was some college kid's dad's old, under-appreciated stereo. I grabbed it. Cleaned the dust off inside and out. Hooked it up. It worked perfectly! All lights worked too. Stupidly, I sold it when I moved a few months later. :duh: I figured I couldn't take everything with me, and I was poor and needed the money, but geesh I think I let it go for like $50.

Thought I would post a pic. This is one of the nicer, cleaner Marantz vintage receivers I have owned.

You gotta luv the older audio stuff!!!

Damn that does look nice  :thumb:.  I've got an 80's Pioneer SA-8500 mk2 integrated in very good condition. Like that vintage stuff.

I just got a 2252B from my brother-in-law.  He is the original owner.  It is in great shape.  I has the wooden case too.  I opened it up and blew out what little dust was inside.  This is a very clean unit.  I was thinking of keeping just for the tuner but it is really a waste for me.  I would prefer someone else enjoy it.  I provide a pic if anyone is interested.

I am also sitting on an even older Marantz Model 30 which I need to sell.

Thanks

Jeff

I believe this one is 35 watts per channel RMS. That's real RMS power, so it should handle most bookshelf speakers with ease. Nice find. Now, mate that up with some Imperial 7s.

Jeff,
I would think twice about selling those Marantz units. I sold one of mine and hard a hard time getting another one later that was really clean. If you do sell, find out the going price on Ebay or even audiogon's service. I would clean it up for some pics. Take some good pics in good light and post them. You will find a buyer quick, if the units are in good shape.
Good luck..

It is in really great shape and although I will regret it I need to sell it because I need the money.  :(
I am willing to let it go for a great price.

Then go sell it in the "market place".

The Market Place would give you the most exposure and is the correct place to list it.
