Best way to convert HDMI audio out to an SP2 input (coax)?

Hi,
I have an Oppo 103 and it outputs SACD and DVD-A only over HDMI (or the analogs), not coax, due to more silly laws.  I don't want to use the Oppo's DAC, only the SP2's, so using the HDMI out is the goal.

The SP2 does not have HDMI audio inputs, so need to convert the HDMI output to preferably coax for the SP2 (or somehow remove the Oppo's restriction!).

Will this work/do any high quality solutions exist?

I love the BUC-1 idea!  I want the same for HDMI!

A number of people here have used the Monoprice #5557 4X1 HDMI® Switcher w/ Toslink & Digital Coaxial Port and the Atlona AT-HD570 HDMI Audio De-Embedder with the Oppo players, but the Atlona only has a Toslink optical output.

Sorry i can't help , but i do have a question. How do you like the Oppo 103 ? By any chance do you use the NFS file mount feature?

Thanks

Thank you very much for the recommendations!

I had googled and found devices, and was afraid they are cheap/degrade sound so much as to make it not worth it.  So I assume these two performed well...

Did anyone find one of these two better than the other?  I can use the Toslink as well if the Atlona is a superior unit.  $45 vs $200, so wondering if the Atlona is worth the extra price?

Very nice unit.  The 103/105 is a neat product that is practically a hub for plugging in different types of sources.

All I really wanted is a transport for Blu-Ray, DVD, and CD, as I have an SP1 and an SP2 and want to use the SP2 DAC.  I also thought it would work well for USB inputs too, and seems to from a few initial plays.  I'm not sure of a better choice (if someone does, please let me know! :-), possibly the Oppo 105, but I didn't need the higher quality analog/DAC features as I assume the SP2's are vastly superior, so didn't see a need to pay twice the price for 105.

My other player is a wonderful old California Audio Labs CL-20, which is a CD/DVD player.  Still sounds amazing.  I mention it as it is what I used for 15 years before the 103.

The 103 video is excellent; I have a 30' HDMI run from the Oppo to a 70" Visio TV, and looks amazing.

I have a MythTV server and tried playing the recordings from the 103.  I could navigate over the network to the server and select, but attempts to play resulted in a "Unknown Format" error.  i don't understand, as Myth stores the files as standard mpegs.  I have not investigated further yet to resolve.

Thanks for the reply. I am looking for a device to act as a DVD/blu ray player & Netflix client. I also want  the device to replace my popcorn hour  media tank and  access video files on my Linux server in the basement. The oppo unit seems to fit the bill. I too have a SP1, but I can either use coax or Toslink for audio as i have no hi rez content .

Cheers,

Oh yes, my family streams Netflix a lot; the 103 does that as well as our Wii and Xbox Netflix streaming too.  The Oppo 103 sounds perfect for you too, and also don't need the 105.

Note: You will quickly learn about the Oppo "Audio Format" setting.  With the SP1, you will probably change it from its default of Bitstream to the 48K LPCM setting, as that's the max the SP1 accepts.  The SP2 goes to 96K.  With the SP2, I typically leave it at Bitstream, as I love having the SP do all the conversions possible and most media I play fits within that (and it's a quick change when streaming digital hi res).

I wonder if any hdmi->coax conversion would be better or worse than using the oppos dacs?
I can't see the benifit?

Great question!  I wondered the same thing with the converters of an unknown quality level to me.  I was hoping someone would quantify here, but have not yet.  If best to use the Oppo for it, then this is where I wish for the Oppo 105 with the better DAC...
If Bryston had one (like the new BUC!), I'd have bought it already :-)
