Does corkboard wall covering act as a decent acoustical room treatment? Has anyone used this?

In a word: No. Cork does absorb some, but not much. And the cork material I see is too thin to absorb at all at lower frequencies. The goal of room treatment is to absorb uniformly over a wide range of frequencies, not just at mid and high frequencies.

You will have to go with much thicker about 1" to get any kind of result, and YMMV.
It can be purchased at McMaster-Carr:  http://www.mcmaster.com/#cork-insulation/=pjau1r

BTW if you go with cork wall covering it is easy to install.

Prep the wall properly with a good wall covering primer and use a heavy duty clear wall covering adhesive at full strength (do not thin it down).
Try not to get any adhesive on the face, and keep a lot of sharp blades handy.
