electronic crossover for LS-6

Danny,

I am new to AC, although I have lurked for a few years now.

I have a pair of ls-6s (from AV123 received new 8/2008) and am thinking of adding a LS-C or N3s for a center (or even the Carnegie Acoustic CSC-1 - if you still have them) .

My receiver is in need of upgrading, and I am thinking of getting a professional amp like QSC or Beheringer or other.  Some of these amps have built in digital  crossovers for bi-amping.  They take the analog amplifier input, A/D --> digital lowpass/highpass --> D/A --> output to a pair of amps.  While it does introduce an additional A/D-D/A step, it eliminates the electronic crossover and any issues with quality of inductors/capacitors/resistors.

The setup options on these electronic crossovers are pretty limited, eg. center freq and slope.

I so I have 2 questions for you:

1) do you still have and of the CSC-1 centers? (even though the LS-C is pretty - it still has size issues with my wife)
2) What do you think of modifying the  LS-6 for electronic crossover? (or other of your speaker designs).

Thanks

Rick

Carnegie has plenty of the CSC-1's left. So no issue there.

I wouldn't use any of those digital crossovers with the LS-6 though. That would be a huge backward step. There is a reason that those units are so cheap. The quality of the parts involved are about the same as what you get in a CD player that you buy from Walmart for $49. Yes, the quality of the D/A conversion is that bad.

Stick with the passive crossover and put your money into a good DAC.

Thanks for the response.

What I had in mind was a QSC DCA 1622 or DCA 2422

with the X3 digital crossover plug in
http://media.qscaudio.com/pdfs/manuals/Cinema_Accessories_revB.pdf  This combination is aimed at professional cinemas.

While I can't comment on the quality of the A/D D/A in the X3, I would think the A/D D/A of the QSC PLD line is good.  This product line is intended for use for live performances in large theaters, and includes programmable crossovers, and equalization.

That gear is designed primarily for the pro market.  A digital crossover like that is not something you'd want to use with a high end speaker like the LS-6. Stick with the passive crossover and get a good quality DAC and the end result will be MUCH better.
