Bryston Power Amps - Bridged Mono
« on: 11 Dec 2012, 07:51 pm »
Looking at the specs of some of the Bryston amps, it mentions the possibility of a "Bridged Mono" connection.

For example, the Bryston 2BSST2 amp mentions:
• 100W into 8 Ohms (180W into 4 Ohms)
• 360W into 8 Ohms (Bridged Mono)

So, if using two of these in a bridged mono configuration, would these act as real mono amps, in the true sense of the word, or is it a compromise (sound-wise) when comparing to true mono amps?

Also, in a bridged mono configuration, would it support any type of speaker?

Hi

Yes they would be true MONO amps but so are our stereo amps because the only thing common is the power cord.

When you bridge an amplifier it 'see's' 1/2 of the impedance it does in stereo so you have to be careful that the amp does not current limit into the very low impedances.  So 4 ohms becomes 2 ohms etc.
