New Woofs!
« on: 16 Jun 2004, 02:01 pm »
I got interested in the new mega-woofers Brian has developed; interest became decision, and today I take my 626Rs in to the factory to have the upgrade done.   I'm eagerly curious as to how the 626Rs will sound after the upgrade, they already portray music as accurately to the real deal as I've heard from a speaker.   Aspects like tighter, deeper bass I suppose are what I have to look forward to, but to tell you the truth, I don't even think in those terms with these speakers; I hear the performances now not the speakers.   Now for the hard part, living without the music for a few days while the work is done...no pain no gain right

Will Brian update the crossover as well (166->280Hz)?

Hey, I thought the entire reason you went to the 626R was get LESS bass!!!

I guess your neighbour must've pissed you off

Nah, if he'd pissed me off I'd have been upgrading to the RM40's and one of Brian's bigger subs, to go along with the upgrade of the 626Rs    Now wouldn't that rock his world...mine too, but in a more postive way.

I doubt he'll experience any more rumble then he's already used to.  Besides, I've gone to the early shift at my work, so I get home a couple of hours before him now.  I get all my intense level listening in at that time  8)

I've said it once, and I'll say it again, "The bass of the 626R, set up in a good room on a bearded stand is to die for"

I had probably the first pair of the new mega-woofs in the 626R and it just got better, plain and simple.

The tone, texture and roundness to each bass note is better.  I only wish all could sit in front of my system and play and replay "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo" and focus on the quality and tone of the bass response.

My 626R system sounds sooooo good right now, I cringe at the thought of making changes (but of course I do)

I bought this disc a couple of months ago, and still haven't played it on the home system.   Sounded mighty good on the Bose car stereo     I'll definitly play it first with the new woofs!

Make sure and let them "break in" a bit before "spinning" that one, or have Big B run them for a few more cycles on his VMPS cooker.

John,

They'll have 48 hours on the cooker before I get them back.   That enough, or should I let them play with more sedate stuff for awhile before going for the mighty cosmic hippo experience

The woofs ended up with about 72 hours of factory burn-in.   I'd selected a few CDs to try out on the new woofs yesterday.   The bulk of these CDs are one's that had stressed the previous woofs, in that the bass output lost tightness and went towards boominess.   Ahhhhhh....tight, deep, not a trace of loose bass response, and a more balanced overall sound to boot.   I'm liking what I hearing a lot.  In my opinion the new megawoofer is an "essential" upgrade for my fellow 626R owners.

I am seriously thinking about upgrading my 626R woofers. My amp is not vey powerful and I wonder if the megawoofer sensivity is  higher than the standard WFC woofer?

Also, is it possible to install the new woofer and upgrade the XO my self - I don't want to send the speakers back to the factory? I ordered the speakers as a kit and I don't mind heating the solder iron again.

If you'll return the old mid xover when you get the new one (supplied no charge with the Megawoofers) you can certainly do the upgrade yourself.

Be warned that the old woofer has a wide flange on the basket and the new one does not, so the appearance of the system will not be as good (new basket is smaller).  The thruhole is the correct size for both woofers.

Price of the upgrade is $195pr including shipping.

Is there a new woofer in the works for the 40's also?

Brian,

before ordering, I need to know if the new woofer is at least as sensitive as the old one.

Thanks,

Bruno

The new woofer is 1dB less sensitive.
