Yet again - more music storage.
« on: 20 Oct 2012, 08:33 pm »
This is where I certainly envy our digital friends for the ease of access that they enjoy to their music. I am curious if anyone stores their music in a different area other than their listening room. I am toying with the idea of removing the closet in my listening room in an up coming renovation and moving my music collection to another room. My collection is around 700 CDs to date and I just do not like the aesthetics of CD jewel cases out in the open. Kind of sitting on the fence with this idea. Does anyone regret not having their music stored in their listening room?

Be well...

I built shelving on the walls in the bedroom where my 2nd system is located. It used to get inconvenient, but not since adding the BDP-1 to the listening room. I don't use the physical media much anymore. I mostly just rip whatever new music I buy, and then place the CD on a shelf for safekeeping. In terms of convenience, playing music from files on a disk drive is hard to beat.

I did build some record storage in the main listening room, but now my turntable has moved to the 2nd system. I don't have the room for the records in the bedroom though, so I do regret having them stored in the room over the garage.

Laundrew,
What is the model number on your ESOTERIC CD player?

Hello PRELUDE.

It is an X-05. Interestingly, I was looking at the Esoteric K-03 the other day and I understand that you can have access to its internal DAC.

Even though I use a music server, I don't have liner notes digitally stored and like to have the CDs close at hand to refer to the inserts.  You might consider an enclosed CD storage cabinet.  Here's one made of solid wood (but maxes out at 612 CDs), is also available in black (!) as well as standard wood finishes and is shipped assembled for ~ $300

That was my point that use your ESOTERIC as a DAC but I do not know if you would like to turn a integrated CD player into the DAC.
The Bryston BDP-1 or 2 with external hard drive will do the job for you if you wish to buy one but one thing you must admit is the music genre that you enjoy(as well I do :D)will never be available for hi-res downloads. So you only going to use the BDP-1 to store and play your CDs.
I am just like you that I do not like to see the CD rack in the living room or even listening room especially when I like few genres and ending up with few thousand CDs.It can turn the living room into the record store easily.
Have you ever thought about a two side drawer under the bed if you have space?

Totally agree with your observation with respect to the music genre that I enjoy listening to  :thumb:

I consider myself very lucky if some of my music is released on SACD and will not hold my breath for any digital hi resolution releases. So as you mentioned, a data player will only be used for playback of my transferred CDs. Another issue with a separate DAC and Data player is that I do not enjoy having a lot of boxes in my system - I would have to try and hide them somehow if I ever went this root.

Another issue with respect to CD storage is that I have been adding 40 or so CDs a year to my collection during the last few years and it would not take long to outgrow a really nice storage system. The photo below is from one of my other posts with respect to music storage. I can purchase the 5 drawer version of this one which will hold over one thousand CDs. If I purchase two of them, one can be for my "dark music" and the other one can house "normal" stuff  You can also pick these up from thrift stores for under $100.00.

Having my music stored in another room will end my storage concerns, but I know that I will miss not having my music close to my audio gear.

Before I ripped my CDs, I too thought I'd miss the jewel cases and all the stuff that comes with them, so I kept my CDs in the room and on the racks where they were after I ripped them.

I honestly didn't pick them up and look at them.  When I moved a few months later, I packed them up and put the boxes in a very accessible spot in the basement.  Didn't take a single one out in the year and a half I lived there.  I moved again, and still haven't taken a single one out.

2 things probably keep me away from them - I have some vinyl, and always have that in my lap when I spin vinyl, and I use a gen 1 Apple TV as my music server.  I see the album art on either my TV or my iPhone (acts as a remote for the ATV) when an album is selected.

I look at the album art and liner notes the first time or two that I listen to a new CD.  After that, I lose interest lately.

The best advice I have is rip your stuff, and keep the jewel boxes around for a little while.  If you find yourself still handling the cases, keep looking into how you can still easily access them without them being all over.  If you're not using them, box them up and store them somewhere safe.  Just don't get rid of them, as theyre a physical backup in case anything happens.

Dave G showed me how he's saving space and I've copied him.  The Jazz Loft (ttp://www.jazzloft.com/p-34281-space-saving-cd-sleeves.aspx) has clear poly sleeves that hold the cd booklet on the left and the the cd and tray card on the right.  Four cd's in poly sleeves fit in the same space as one jewel box.  They sell 200 sleeves for $36 including shipping in the US.
