Happy Anniversary CD!
« on: 1 Oct 2012, 10:24 pm »
All,

Does anyone remember this date: October 1, 1982? In the paper, today in history, Sony began selling the first commercial compact disc player, the CDP-101, in Japan. So happy anniversary to the CD!! I remember in January 1983 when it came to the US market, it retailed for $1000. I heard it but did not buy it, could not afford it back then. The very next year, I purchased Sony's second generation model for $650, I believe it was the CDP-650. Digital technology has come along way since then.

That seems wildly inappropriate for most forums, let alone audio.  Do you know what the most accepted meaning of the acronym stands for?

Steve I can't speak for Jack...he speaks for himself rather well...but yes, I know the acronym and you are correct about it's appropriateness or lack thereof on this or any board.  My post was with tongue firmly in cheek..

I guess you don't as CD's are no where close to being perfect sound forever,,, closer to 100 years. But I would agree that today digital technology is closing in on just that.  :thumb:

I've got neighbors living in a 60's trailer with only a hand movable antenna that say the same exact thing about their 30-something year analog TV picture.

Not the same, just look at LP sales.  Also, VPI is pretty busy selling this outdated technology!

This age old argument will go on forever.  Looks like the LP is here to stay....great.  I like the sound of my old records especially when freshly cleaned on my VPI cleaning machine.  There's nothing quite like putting on something like Geo Bensons "Give Me the Night", pouring you and the mrs. a glass of wine and turning down the lights.  I take that back.  There's nothing quite like what happens after having done all that.  But seriously the warm LP sound is something that not all cds are capable of reproducing.  I do have some...and yes they are redbook...that come very close.  The nice thing about listening to my server is the lack of pops and clicks plus my 64 year old behind stays seated in my lazy boy while having access to something like 4000 FLAC files, the majority of which sound very very good.  So all you vinyl guys and ones-and-zeros guys need to take a deep breath and accept the fact that both mediums (vinyl albeit to a much lesser degree) are here for the duration.  Now go sit in the sweet spot and enjoy this wonderful hobby.

I lived in some pretty flimsy domiciles in my younger days, and I was overjoyed to have a source that did not have to be hung from the ceiling to avoid skipping when someone walked across the floor... and I haven't looked back since.

Nicely said Gavin!  :thumb: Unfortunaly for me, LP's are a little hard to handle, I did hear some nice analog systems at the Capital Audio Fest this past July. My Anni's are shipping this Friday for the upgrade! Come on Gavin, I'm waiting for you to pull the trigger on the upgrade!
